I don't think it was an attempt by Conor to keep his belt as much as it was an attempt to promote the eventual fight with Khabib, who is most likely going to win tomorrow.
sure the easy way to think of it was that he was defending artem lobov. the next step is a bit deeper... either he gets a fight with khabib there and that takes khabib of the card which sets up a rematch with holloway or hes promoting his fight with khabib. so it was a win/win situation that he truly managed to screw up!
