Well, the athletic commissions aren't unified on all their rules. NSAC limit is 265 for sure. And that would be a problem if Makhov got popular. You can't avoid fighting in Nevada forever if you pull in good numbers. I do think it would be a foregone conclusion if they wanted to change the weight class limit, but the process wouldn't be as simple as an in-house rule change.

Hmm. Well, it looks as if the ABC doesn't have a limit of 265. I thought for sure they did. It makes me wonder why NSAC has that limit.

I wonder if it was a PR move. Most 300 lb guys don't look as athletic or in shape to the average joe. It might have been part of the big plan (back when Lorenzo was on the NSAC) to prevent unsightly walrus fights.

That's my interpretation of it as well. They wanted a certain look when they first started and legislated to encourage it.

So they have a SHW division now?
I believe the UFC website just copied the ABC's rules from 2012, and haven't updated it - but that's a different issue. That's in reference to there being a 265+ SHW division in MMA as regulated by the State Commissions, but the UFC itself does not have a SHW division.

As usual, there is no clear tracing of the thread through the commission/promotion tapestry. Can somebody get Jake Shields' number?

that guy just needs to work on striking:
  • technique
  • timing
  • footwork
As long as he's only focusing on a few strikes, he should be able to figure out how to dirty box/wrestle fuck people with that noise.

He definitely has a shot at UFC gold in the future. He is only 28. Most of the HW are on the back side of their careers. He will be able to learn how to strike, defend subs, etc for a couple years while he fights the lower tier guys. As someone said, he will beat several guys just by being able to ragdoll them. The biggest question I would have is his cardio. Can an monster like that keep going if the fight goes into the later rounds? We know Brock can make it through 3 rounds, but he had some help (allegedly). Have we seen someone as big as that go into the 4th or 5th???

Jon Jones, Dan Henderson, Randy Couture, Chael Sonnen, and Matt Lindland have all had very successful careers with a Greco Roman base.
They all either have good striking or long mma experience. As for the old generation "Randy and Dan" in the old days maybe one martial art can get you there. today you need to be an all rounded fighter. its a must.
Jones last fight had almost zero wrestling, same for dan.

a 290lb guy can get to 265 by not eating much for 2 day, taking a huge dump or three and cutting 15 pounds of water (which is extremely simple at that size)...

basically walking at 290lbs and making 265 = < 10% of his bodyweight
