Conor McGregor might be putting the Floyd Mayweather Jr talk on hold.

Though there has been much talk recently about the possibility of McGregor boxing Mayweather, it seems he still has his sights set on a rematch with Nate Diaz. Recently, McGregor spoke with ESPN about rematching Diaz and why he wanted to fight at 170 lbs. again.

"What kind of fighter would I be, if I said, 'Hey, I didn't get you at 170, let me try to get you at 155.' I'll make my adjustments. I ate up to the weight. This time, I won't do that."

"The first eight minutes of the fight was easy. Let's be honest, I slapped the head off him. Once the gas tank went, that was it. I drowned. He landed that one punch that rang the bell and went, '[Gasp,] I'm back.' He was close to being done. One or two more shots and he would have been wrapped up."

McGregor said it was his own mismanagement of energy and effective offense which caused him to lose. While many would have expected the fighter coming in on ten days notice to be the one with the cardio issues, it was McGregor who gassed out early. He blames this on his change in preparation when the fight was changed to a 170 lb. contest.

"Swinging on gymnastic rings on fight week isn't the best thing. Usually, I wrap myself in bubble wrap and only do fight-specific things, but just because of that weight, no weight cut, I had put it in my head that, 'I'm free.' I had energy to burn. I was doing so much bounce footwork, the balls of my feet were burned to a crisp. Looking back, it was ridiculous. I don't know what I was thinking."

Most of what he says makes sense except

"He was close to being done. One or two more shots and he would have been wrapped up."

If they rematch and he has this mentality it's going to play out similar to the first. Conor won the first round but lost the striking battle over the course of the fight due to head hunting causing the fatigue. The rematch should look more competitive but I think Nate wins again.

Oh for fuck's sake...no. Just no.

He was hitting Nate & had him marked up, but if Conor thinks he was close to being done, he's never seen a The Diaz Bros fight before.

Yeah, doesn't sound like he has learned much if he really believes this.

I'm reminded of Conor saying Nate will fall like the rest, only to have Nate say, "and if I don't? then what? what happens then?"

Conor's in-fight game plan was not great winging huge energy into the air over and over.

How many times have we watched the stronger fighter win round one, only to get whittled down afterwards?

Fight week shenanigans don't change the fact that Conor needs to focus on a game plan of beating up Nate in a variety of ways before trying for the kill.

Are there any people on here who actually eat what Conor is cooking?

Honestly, what he did in the first fight was possibly his best shot at victory, yet it failed.

I was reading some posts on BE to where people were actually eating this up. Saying that if Conor paces himself in a rematch, he will win? If Conor paces himself in a rematch, he will just allows the longer taller fighter to find his rhythm and start fuxking Conor up.

Díaz is know for his ridiculous volume. He doesn't slow down throughout the fight. If Conor manages to make it to the later rounds with Nate, he will be in for a straight up cowboy style ass whooping. Nate will lay on Conor what he laid on Maynard.

Conor's biggest shot is, and will always be, a fast start with a potentially early left hand knockout.

Reading his comments, you'd think that McGregor was the one who didn't have much of a fight camp.

Diaz's explanation made a lot more sense: He ate some shots early and then completely dominated after shaking the rust off.

Disagreed 100%.

Conor fell in love with his power, thought he was going to take Diaz out in short order, and blew all his energy going for the big home run shot. I've seen this happen to so many big punchers in boxing over the years (most famously Ali/Foreman rope-a-dope). Can't chase the KO, gotta let it happen.

Conor fought a stupid fight, and it was in no way his best shot at victory. He should have followed the RDA blueprint of putting money in the bank with leg kicks and body shots. Being conservative and only engaging on his terms. RDA did that beautifully for the most part, and Conor has the physical tools to execute that blueprint even better imo.

Easy to kick a guy while he's down, but I'm keeping a list of all you naysayers and shit talkers, because when Conor whips Nate in the rematch, I'm gonna be doing a lot of laughing at you all. And us Irish ALWAYS laugh the hardest (because we're constantly drunk).

Exactly my sentiments. If Connor doesn't pressure and bring the fight to Nate, Nate will just smother drown him. Connor doesn't have the particular set of skills to beat Nate in a tactical way.

Conor has decent body kick, but not nearly as powerful as RDAs kicks. Also, with Conor, díaz doesn't have to worry about any ground game the way he did with RDA. Conor could throw a couple of kicks and succeed, but he won't be able to keep up with Diazs volume if he tries to pace himself.. The longer he paces himself, the deeper into the díaz waters he gets.

I love the doubt. Conor will adjust. Nate won't. We'll see how that goes. I favor Nate in the hematch. Slightly. But all you who think Conor has no shot at beating Nasty Nate are delusional. Let's see how this works when Conor comes in with a better gas tank and a real game plan. Spinning back kicks and teeps to the body will make hay against baby bro.

Do you think that the the Nate beat Conor will be the same as the Nate with a training camp? Seems easy to make excuses for conor but gassed or not he could barely put away a off the couch Mendes and lost to cabo Nate.
