I vaguely remember watching a British documentary about the case some years back, supposedly telling the story that couldn't legally be told in the US (not sutre if that was just bullshit to make a more compelling TV programme).
It strongly leaned towards the family being innocent, and the police being incompetent.
I've watched enough documentaries about cold cases / conspiracy theories to know that they can make any theory sound extremely believable though, for example I've watched at least three regarding different identities of Jack the Ripper that seemed very plausible.
