You guys are fucking INSANE, you realize you could die if that ice cracks and you fall in right?

This thread makes me feel worse than the youtube videos of kids doing stupid shit at the top of cranes.

Please be safe out there guys I really worry about yous
Thanks for the concern, but there is 2 feet of ice, and basically zero danger if a guy is smart and does things like keeping the truck speed under 23 km/h. I'll be driving on for at least another month.

Dude, that looks like great fun! Fuck, i wish we had snow here, but get nothing here on south coast of England. Just grey skies and traffic. Fuck i need to emigrate.
I watched some limeys walking on a lake for the first time a few years ago. There was 2-3 feet of ice, but these 2 were tiptoeing along, unable to believe they were safe. As a dumbass who sometimes goes out on 2-3 inches of ice, I was quite amused. :)

It's hard to explain how much fun ice fishing is, but I absolutely love it. It's a lot more social than summer fishing, as you can get a group together and all fish in the same little section of lake.

The first weekend in March I will be at our annual gathering of boneheads for our weekend on the ice. A group of us will be sleeping out on the ice and fishing, drinking, smoking and feasting on fresh fish all weekend. It's my favorite weekend of the year. Guys bring moose, deer, and whatever other wild game they have in the freezer. Sometimes one bud brings his homemade trailer and satellite dish and we watch TV and play poker while fishing through customized holes he's put in the floor. It's redneck heaven.

I should have also mentioned, I'm a rigger, so I also do stupid shit on cranes, towers, etc. I've spent a lot of hours a few hundred feet up in the air, hanging in a basket from a crane boom or on the outside of a fractionation tower. Except unlike those dumb kids, I am well trained and get paid very well for it.

Cool I always wanted to be a rigger as a kid, now I just tell them what they can and cant do if they want to stay Insured...

How much do riggers make where you are with OT? here they clear $100,000AUD

Certain lakes have currents or springs that can cause weakness in the ice. Sometimes there are thin spots where frost heaves form. Basically the ice is forced up to form a ridge that could be a few inches or 8 feet high and can be miles long.

As someone who's been ice fishing since I could walk, I do my homework and practice safety. I don't go on lakes with springs, I drill test holes if I'm somewhere unfamiliar, I don't wear a seatbelt and keep a window open in case I have to bail out of the truck.

I can understand you avoiding snow and ice, but I have to live with it. Like just about anything, the more you understand it, the easier it is to live with it, and even enjoy it. Cheers.

Are you on site, or an office guy? Is there a lot of rigger work in Oz?

I'm a fitter/rigger. Our package, with benefits, is somewhere around $70 or so/hr. Eight hours of straight time, time and a half from 8-10 hours, and everything after 10 and all day Saturday and Sunday is double time.
The last shutdown I did was 7-12's for a month, so the money was pretty crazy. Most jobs are 6-10's, which is still pretty good.
I work like a bastard when I have to and enjoy life for most of the year. Some guys work year round, but I'm a simple man with simple needs, and there's a lot more to life than chasing dollars.
