I'd be VERY curious to see the questions that were asked to get these results.
When I was in high school, they had the mother of a bullied gay kid come in and speak to our class. During her presentation, she made the statement that 42% of boys share a sexual experience with another male before they are 21 years old.
My hand immediately went up and I called her out on her bullshit. I pressed her to clarify the questions that were asked to generate this statistic. After she mentioned a couple blatantly homosexual acts that 99.9% of dudes have zero interest in, she said one of the questions was "Have you ever watched porn or thumbed through a nuddie magazine with a friend?"
The entire class laughed. Thumbing through some woods porn in a treehouse is a right of passage for any 12 year old boy. But it doesn't make them gay.
Questions are asked to generate the results they want. I agree when you say a generation is being damaged by this bullshit, but I also think the 7.2% figure is every bit as bogus as the mom trying to convince 200 kids they might be just as gay as her son.
TL/DR: Bullshit stats are bullshit.
