IMO the best approach is to use several sources. If you see something on CNN and you want to learn more begin googling. Checkout any sources to gather the real facts. Sometimes you can find things like quotes from police departments or government agencies which will have way less spin on them than a Fox/CNN article.

Editorial section of wsj is extremely far right opinion wise

Other than that, I guess it does fall in mainstream tho even tho I usually think of it as right leaning

I'd agree with that, and I'm a regular WSJ reader.
Pretty center with a right leaning opinion section.
