I was going to put this in my Cage vs. Ring poll thread but decided it deserved it's own thread...

I have a design in mind for an MMA ring where there are 8 posts. So imagine a regular ring except between each of the posts you are used to, there is another post that would look like this (sort of):



The outside rectangle (thinner line) would be a platform like Affliction had. So basically, between the extra rope support from the additional posts and the extended platform, the fear of falling out of the ring is eliminated yet you still have the clarity of a ring for spectators and the cameras along with all the other benefits of a ring for MMA (no "wall crawler" or "wall n' stall" or trapping opponents).

What do ya'll think?

Is there a way we could combine the ring and a cage? Like it would be a ring, but with cage lining under the bottom rope?

Honestly, I'm not a fan of having something (in the past a net) on the bottom of the ropes. It will only serve to block camera angles and allow fighters to get trapped/pinned. And possible trapped worse than a cage since the will get pinned hut not be able to use the cage to wall crawl back up.

Also, the biggest issue with take downs in the cage is that you can't keep sprawling when you hit the cage and your feet end up under your hips. With a clearance under the bottom rope fighters can keep their legs sprawled behind them preventing their opponent from controling their hips.

See I just keep thinking back to Pride with guys fallings through the ropes, getting stuck in the ropes, those awkward restarts that killed the momentum, etc. Remember Duarte/Kerr? What a horror show...

I still think the cage is optimal for MMA, above the ring. When you add grappling, you really need something that is going to keep people contained. And of course the cage just becomes another thing you have to allow for in your strategy as a fighter.

I doubt it would come as a surprise but I hate the cage. I really dislike the idea of how much an impact it has on the fight itself and how it is basically used as a tool by the fighters. I've never had a problem with restarts. I prefer restart to wall n stall. They both have their issues and with this design the idea is to eliminate the biggest issue with the ring: falling out killing yourself because the ropes are too loose.

What about an open mat concept with no cage or ropes....but it's sloped upwards.

Yes, but the entire reason I am proposing this fighting area is to find the area that has the LEAST impact on the fight itself. Cages allow fighters to get their opponents feet under their hips for an easier takedown and a slanted barrier would actually allow a fighter to drive their opponent into it and trip the completely because their is no support to sit back on like a vertical cage...

Lol! Then MMA would become Electric Sumo(tm), where each fighter spends all 3-5 rounds trying to knock their opponent into the fence and electrocute them!

I've seen a ring with a canvas covering from the bottom rope to the floor, just trying to find a photo of it, and I think it was a square ring with 8 posts so the canvas would be more rigid.

something like this? the nets are weak but maybe beef up that part so fighters won't fall out or get strangled by it
