Canadian baby 'first without gender designation' on health card

The parent says that a visual inspection at birth is not capable of determining a person's gender
An eight-month old Canadian baby has been issued a health card without a gender marker, in what could be the first case in the world.

Parent Kori Doty - a non-binary transgender person who identifies as neither male nor female - aims to allow the child to discover their own gender.

The health card has been issued with a "U" in the space for "sex", which could be for "undetermined" or "unassigned".

Kori Doty is fighting to omit the gender from the birth certificate.

The parent gave birth to Searyl Atli in November at a friend's home in British Columbia. Kori Doty, who prefers to use the pronoun they, argues that a visual inspection at birth is unable to determine what gender that person will have or identify with later in life.

They want to keep Searyl's sex off all official records.

"I'm raising Searyl in in such a way that until they have the sense of self and command of vocabulary to tell me who they are, I'm recognising them as a baby and trying to give them all the love and support to be the most whole person that they can be outside of the restrictions that come with the boy box and the girl box," the parent was quoted by CBC as saying.

Kori Doty, a community educator who is part of the Gender-Free ID Coalition, said that those who feel different to the gender designation assigned at birth face several problems later in life trying to change their documents.

"When I was born, doctors looked at my genitals and made assumptions about who I would be, and those assignments followed me and followed my identification throughout my life," Kori Doty said.

"Those assumptions were incorrect, and I ended up having to do a lot of adjustments since then."

In the case of Searyl Atli, the parent said that the authorities have refused to issue the birth certificate without a gender designation and so the parent has applied for a judicial review of the case.

The family's lawyer, barbara findlay, who chooses to spell her name without capital letters, told Global News: "The assignment of sex in this culture is done when a medical person lifts up the legs and looks at the baby's genitals. But we know that the baby's own gender identity will not develop for some years until after they're born."

Canadian media reported that the baby's health card could be the first in the world to not have a gender designation.

People are getting really angry about it on Facebook. I think it's weird but I don't really care. Is gender important on a birth certificate?

On the certifícate yeah I don't care so much I agree with you.

I think it's pretty much the rest.

Look at her and in all seriousness tell me she's not f in the head. Many people are getting lost with that new trans/genre debate. I feel angry because I really wonder if she's not going to screw with her kid's mental health/upbringing.

Call me conservative. I realized more and more that I am and I'm fine with that.

You care, if only because you have an easier time pouring truckloads of gasoline all over the fire.......

It's quite topical here, as we have a trans woman competing BJJ and smashing people.

I think the kid in the story will likely suffer socially. I don't think that makes you conservative. Personally, I don't identify with a political spectrum. Both sides have holes in their logic, which is what I find truly abhorrent.

it's a medical document, not a social one. You can do a genetic test at 9 weeks and know the allocation of X and Y chromosomes.

Put that on the birth document.

Regarding the raising of the kids, there are FAR worse situations for kids that we should all be focusing on fixing - if it's really about the welfare of children.

I do not agree with trans people competing in sports be it fighting or otherwise. But especially combat sports unless it was a mixed race class.

Well, I think it depends on the situation and the sport. How is race relevant?

Whoops, unintentional racism. I meant mixed sex.

Since sports are competitive and depending on sex you can have a large advantage that enables you to destroy the competition I don't think trans people should be allowed to compete as anything other than the sex they were born as.

Imagine Lebron in the WNBA, Tyson as a female boxer, phelps in women's swimming, Messi in women's soccer the women wouldn't have a chance.

IMAO, people competing outside of their genetic classification is 'natural juicing'.
Only slightly different than shooting up a bunch of hormones and PEDs.

I think you have to specify further, such as "they shouldn't be allowed to compete against women."

I don't care if a trans man or a trans woman enters my bracket in a BJJ comp.

The discussion on the UK forum is quite interesting. Lots of hateful and mocking comments, as you'd expect, but most women simply object to the weight difference (the individual is around 200lbs). She was on a podcast and gave some interesting insight. However, a lot of people who support trans females are arguing about hormone levels. Personally, I'm not convinced that hormone levels are the only thing that give men a physical advantage and the anecdotal data supports that.

I hope it's a boy and it ends up doing all things male when he grows up. Football, wrestling, weightlifting, boxing. Guzzling beers. Frat dude. Hunting. Hiking. Total poon hound.

That would be awesome.

I disagree, that female is taking the place of a man. Even if that man is weak and will be knocked out in the first round he deserves to be there more than her. I believe is should be treated the same way as a man being in a women's tournament. Just because they are likely to lose does not mean they belong there.

If they qualify, they qualify. They don't have an advantage, so let them try out.

I'll have to agree to disagree with you. I'm all for men and women and whatever's in between open competition but if it's a men competition then it's men and visa versa with females.

Do Canadian birth certificates list sex or gender?
What seems to be lost in all the talk of fluid gender is that ones gender and sex are not the same thing. sex is a biological concept based on biological characteristics, whereas gender deals with personal, societal and cultural perceptions of sexuality. A transgender women(born a male) can not give birth no matter how hard she tries. A transgender male (born a female) will never have prostate issues. Medical traits and issues are not constructs of the brain.
I support people with gender identity issues but there also has to be a realistic view of the medical differences.
