The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth
by Anton Szandor LaVey

© 1967

  1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
  2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
  3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
  4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
  5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
  6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
  7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
  8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
  9. Do not harm little children.
  10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
  11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

I think that people have concept of right and wrong unless there is some mental illness. And knowing right from wrong is part of what makes us human. Doing right and not giving in to the temptation of wrong is hard. I fail all the time. But doing your best is what's important.

Kinda like jiminy cricket said, always let your conscience be your guide.
I absolutely agree with you, although I believe your surroundings help guide your morality to an extent. But that's a different topic to whether or not Jesus condones the laws of the Torah (he clearly states that he does).

I havent played any semantics game. You acknowledge that I made no comment regarding his anti victimhood stance yet you've taken issue with me over it. You also state that you may be "picking up" on something I haven't said. Subtelty is not my way, if I have an opinion that I want to share, I'll share it. Making assumptions on someone's opinion over the internet and taking issue with that opinion is unlikely to be very fruitful.

To answer your question, I don't agree with the guy's stance. That has nothing to do with his religion. I do agree that if he is reporting accurately (as it is simply his anecdote), that kid seems entitled and needs to harden up if he wants to be successful at university. What I disagree with is his comment that his university may not be for them. I think a better stance would be to try to educate these kids, rather than just write them off.
That's a pretty fair outlook. I disagree in that, if you've spent any amount of time with the public, you'd understand some of these fuckers need to be written off and time not spent wasted on them. Too many lost causes out there.

I have enjoyed the convo though. It was fruitful on my behalf because I like intellectual (or in my case wannabe intellectual) conversation that makes me have to use my head a little bit. I come in contact with a lot of morons day to day in real life and it's refreshing to not have to dumb myself down (more so than I already am) to communicate. Thanks.

No worries. I do appreciate I have a somewhat aggressive logical approach that may seem condescending. That's not my intention and I fully understand the perils of debating over the interwebz :)

Declining Student Resilience: A Serious Problem for Colleges | Psychology Today

There has been an increase in diagnosable mentalhealth problems, but there has also been a decrease in the ability of many young people to manage the everyday bumps in the road of life. Whether we want it or not, these students are bringing their struggles to their teachers and others on campus who deal with students on a day-to-day basis. The lack of resilience is interfering with the academic mission of the University and is thwarting the emotional and personal development of students.”

As a lost cause, I couldn't agree more.

Do you not view these kids as victims of neglect? They've managed to get to university so they must have some redeeming features.

I went from failing grades due to acting like a dumb kid without accountability to graduating with a First Class with honours. It required a big attitude change but it can be done.

I colleague of mine from university once said that, "You have the right to be offended, but you do not have the right to not be offended."

I always liked that statement and it's never been more true than now. The sense of entitlement is so out of control with many students that it's hard to get them to listen to reason or to be intellectually honest with themselves or others. I love how the students in the first clip on the first page were infringing upon the freedom of the press (of the student reporter) and lying about how he couldn't take a photo in a public place where there is no expectation of privacy.

I don't have the right to not be offended? I'm not offended and you can't take that right away from me.

It totally can be done, Leigh, but the kind of honest self-reflection and straight up determination to stop whining and start doing is becoming more and more rare these days. I was a dumb, cocky kid too. I was also the first in my family to go to university straight out of high school.

I'm willing to bet that your parents didn't just give you whatever you wanted and patted you on the back for doing a half-assed job at something or for just being you. I know mine didn't.

Leigh @Leigh : He meant never be offended, but I wanted to quote him directly. I realize the syntax and diction is a little awkward, but that's the way he said it. But you were joking, right??

I would lead with the quote that makes sense.

After reading the next post and putting it together, I also like your friend's quote. Thanks for sharing. :D

@Alienator : I almost did go with, "You have the right to be offended, but you do not have the right to never be offended."
However, I'm very OCD about quoting personal sources directly;
i.e. "Did he say that?"
"Yes."
"Did he say that exactly?!"
"Yes; I was there when he said it."

LOL of course. Just thought I'd tease the guy who hit me with a rainbow ;)
