Personally, I agree with them. Just because you may have store in a neighbourhood that might be prone to gun violence and robberies doesn't mean you should try to protect yourself.

Can you give me a brief explanation of how they got to this bullshit opinion? Haha

In some of these high crime neighbourhoods, there is a black majority populace. So when you take extra measures to protect yourself in these areas - like putting up protection glass - you are stereotyping black people as thugs who will rob you and/or do you bodily harm.

I was hoping there was something more creative to it.

If I were pitching it I would say that by creating an environment where it appears that you have to go to extreme measures to protect yourself it drives away the type of person that they want to move into, and enrich, the community and therefore make it safer and drive out the negativity.

This city is rapidly gentrifying thanks to the universities pouring money into remaking West and North Philly. The way neighborhoods are you could literally have a store with bulletproof glass up on one block and the next block over it's soy crisps and iced frappuccinos. It's a weird town.

Philadelphians are pretty obnoxious and intolerable, but they're nowhere near the obnoxiousness/intolerability level of New Yorkers or New Jerseyans.

I used to go to this one beer/liquor place in Baltimore that had bulletproof glass all over the place.....it was by my friends house (rich trust fund baby who ironically lived in a great neighborhood but if you wanted beers quickly you had to walk 3 blocks down instead of driving to access a normal place)

Anyway, I used to walk in while high and drunk and I kind of understood why they had bulletproof glass in there......I had to walk through groups of people staring at me and making comments......probably left me alone because I look like a cop to that particular element of people......the glass is necessary

If anything, I think this works out well for the black community. As we know, institutional racism and poverty forces a lot of young black men into a life of crime. If you have bullet proof glass in your store, a young black man may be dissuaded from robbing the store, avoiding a lengthy jail sentence and criminal record that will ruin any chances he has of becoming a happy, productive member of society.

And even if he does decide to rob the store, often times robberies go bad and someone ends up getting shot in the confusion. The bullet proof glass could prevent a homicide and keep the charge of armed robbery, and not murder 1.
