I think a big part of it is this plane crashed in such a spectacular fashion in the middle of the city. If it had crashed the same way but in the mountains somewhere I don't think it would have gotten much news.

Imo something ignited inside the aircraft seconds after takeoff.
Likely incapacitated the pilot and/or controls. Full fuel load.
Jets don't fly unless they are going fast, so it was full throttle trying to climb up and out of the airport.
