The former UFC and PRIDE talent could face up to 50 years in prison, for the apparent murder of his girlfriend at the Jardin San Pancho Hotel in Bahia de Banderas, Mexico earlier this month.

As the potential murder case against former UFC and PRIDE talent Phil Baroni prepares to move forward, ESPN Deportes’ Carlos Contreras Legaspi reports that authorities have transferred the 46-year-old New York native from the local jail cell where he had been held on suspicion of killing a woman, so far only referred to as “Paola.”

According to Baroni’s claims, he had apparently been living with the woman at a hotel in the Bahia de Banderas region of Mexico, when the two quarreled over her revelation to the former fighter that she had cheated on him. In a statement to local police, Baroni is reported to have said that he picked the woman up and threw her into the shower, where she struck her head multiple times. He then moved her to the bed and left the room, to get cigarettes and beer at the woman’s request. He went on to claim that she was unresponsive when he returned, and could not be revived, which is when he contacted authorities.

Counter to Baroni’s story, the police report that the woman showed multiple injuries not just to her head, but to her legs, arms, and torso. Baroni has also claimed that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.

In preparation for a Monday hearing to confirm Baroni’s legal status to stand trial, authorities have reportedly transferred him to the CERESO Estatal (state prison) in Tepic. The Tepic prison is notorious for its overcrowding, lack of oversight, and poor conditions.

As of a June 2022 study, that noted the prison as one of Mexico’s worst for 11 years running, the Tepic facility houses 1,865 inmates in a compound designed to hold just 894. The study also noted that a lack of adequate staffing meant that the prison was especially susceptible to extortion and bribery, and the that inmates had created their own authority systems within the prison structure.

According to Legaspi’s report, assuming Baroni’s trial goes ahead, the ‘New York Bad Ass’ will likely be facing 30-50 years in prison on murder charges.

There will be a hierarchy and, though I would like to think baroni could twat some boys one on one, they will be most likely be putting him in line quickly

Especially, if acts the bad ass. Depends on how much money he has to pay them off?

All I've ever seen and heard is it sure doesn't go well for non-Mexicans in those prisons. Even the Mexican-Americans have it bad there. Still can't be as bad as a shithole Brazilian prison but he should've stayed in Murica'...

I think he’s broke and out of friends.

Office of the Public Prosecutors agents presented evidence to the judge establishing Baroni, a former UFC, Pride, Strikeforce, Bellator and One Championship fighter, as the suspect in her death.
In a release requested by ESPN, the general prosecutor of the State of Nayarit Office said that Baroni verbally and then physically assaulted the woman, causing “at least 37 injuries” that resulted in her death.

Baroni vs a chainsaw in the next prison video I’ll refuse to watch.

It's common knowledge that if you fight the bean, you gotta fight the burrito.

Baroni is going to be fucked in prison.

Sad to see.

Even more sad is that he's literally a walking dead man in State Pen.

Won't be long before we are reading his obituary

As long as the cameras are “accidentally”turned off and the suicide guards “fall asleep”, I’ll be happy to bet
Assuming he gets convicted to a long sentence, I think we can all agree that he's not long for this world. I don’t know how fast the wheels of justice spin in Mexico, but I give him 6 months from today until he’s dead.

Aye. I’d be surprised if he lasts that long, me young friend

Sad news all around. I enjoyed his fights. I always rooted for that underdog during the PRIDE days. I think my favorite fight of his was the StrikeForce fight vs Frank Shamrock. For a moment he had a resurgence and a chance of winning that fight. I will remember him from those years.

My postal connections have informed me that Phil Baroni now faces up to 75 years in prison due to his MMA background & is on suicide watch in prison. He has already had his teeth knocked out by the guards. How many teeth?....I do not know.

Stay tuned for more....
