CLIFFS:
Matt Serra locked his brother Nick out of Serra BJJ gyms about 5 years ago.
Nick always thought of himself as a partner, but Matt did not think so.

So now.... almost 5 years later,

Nick Serra makes a Facebook post apologizing for all his actions due to having a mental breakdown, which was purportedly caused by his brother kicking him out as a gym partner.

Locked you out of the Academy’s?? I think you failed to mention your inappropriate behavior with a 17 yr old, breaking one of my students arms after he tapped out because you felt disrespected, showing up late as fuck for the whopping three classes I had you teach a week that is if you even showed up at all. I’ve been putting out fires from you from day one, your behavior constantly putting everything I built at risk and all because I was taking care of you. You’ve been attacking my character for the last 4.5 years and to be honest I’m just sick of it. You never put a dime into any of the schools and your work ethic is nonexistent, I took care of you all your life and this is my thank you?? I’m not angry, you’re sick and it doesn’t help that you have an idiot with his own agenda in your ear. This isn’t a back and forth, it’s a one time only response on here. I’m not looking for people to take sides and nor do I want any words about “family” and he’s my “brother” and yada yada.... nobody but the people closest seen what I been thru. Anyone friends with me on here wants to chime in than cool we will no longer be friends on here. Life is way too short for this type of negativity and I won’t entertain it, I have a beautiful family and students that I love and love me back...I’m a very lucky man. I truly wish nothing but the best for you. Drama and negativity I rooted that shit out of my life root and stem. Peace out ✌

I can attest Nick is a douchebag and absolutely unhinged. The guy Matt mentions whose arm got popped is a close friend.

His brother is clearly mentally ill, there's no need to defend yourself from allegations made by a sick person and publicly shame him, as it already clear what's going on. You think people are going to look at the tweet and their first reaction is going to be 'I fully believe the allegations of this rambling, crazy guy'?

It's your brother. You keep your mouth shut and you alert someone else in your family about the post to try and get him some help.

That's a fair point, but Matt has tried many times over the years to get him help and has personally done a lot of damage control for him. Nick has been disparaging him publicly and privately for some time now, including among his students while trying to poach them. It's easy to say he should take the high road, but he's had to live with it a long time and is justifiably just airing his frustration. At this point you can argue they're no longer family and he doesn't have to pretend they are now that their mom is gone.

It's his very obviously mentally ill brother, not an estranged business partner. The tweet speaks for itself - anyone with any sense understands what's going on, thus there is nothing to defend.

In isolation he could just be a good guy airing his frustration. But I'm not looking at in isolation. Guys's a douche and this is another douche move.

I trained at Matts place for a long time and Nick was a mess all the time. Nick showed up wasted once and starting trying to "pick" a fight so to speak with everyone and Matt went fucking nuts. He pretty much Uncle Philed him out the dojo lol.

Sad to see family feuds but I think Matt handled it just fine. Why let someone slander you to the world and try to tear down what you worked so hard for?

And sorry, being "mentally ill" does not give you carte blanche to be a massive asshole and fuck with everyone. Some people (including a certain someone in this thread) feel like it does. Fuck that. It's a delicate situation but I think Matt handled it perfectly. He just stated the facts and moved on.

Imo it's a no-win situation - no matter what he did or didn't do someone would have said he mishandled it.
