Whether it lands of not is irrelevant. He threw it to land and to the naked eye your cannot tell so therefore the referee should stop.

He shouldn't have had the opportunity to land it after those illegal elbows. Those are what really finished that fight

Whether it landed or not absolutely matters, a kick in the thigh is not a nut shot , unless it lands on the nuts it's legal
