Screw him, lots of people his age have transferred from checkers level thinking to chess level thinking in their brains. It might not be a bad thing that he was humiliated and has to face the realization that his thoughts don't go past 1 step and he might start analyzing things in his head and questioning ideas and opinions to see if he can develop premises and conclusions. To be fair though, some (maybe most) people go their entire lives and never develop into doing that.
