USA has the worst trade balance in the world, they're the largest net importer in the world... Every economic theory that exists agrees thats an awful thing.

Tariffs are not about paying more or less for goods but about correcting that issue.

USA SHOULD have the most tariffs in the world to correct the massive economic unbalance.
False.

LOL you play your character well.
The trade balance that doesn't effect you, has lead to better lives for Americans. The American government knew that when they introduced free trade to the world.

Americans now pretending that they're hard done by being able to purchase reasonably goods is laughable. Anyone who thinks American manufacturing was decimated because of free trade is an idiot and hasn't spent any time looking at why those jobs actually left. But if you think paying 25% more for virtually everything you buy is good, I really don't know what to tell you.

30% of goods coming into the USA already are subject to duties.. The majority of the 70% that don't are from a small handful of countries over a select basket of goods.

Free trade benefits both parties if trade is balanced. USA is unbalanced in the wrong direction... And holy fuck is it unbalanced with China specifically.. They're like 50% of their global trade deficit. China heavily restricts American imports and USA barely restricts anything in response. Chinese domestic market rivals thr American domestic market and most American industries and companies have very limited access to it yet Chinese companies and industries have very minimally restricted access to us markets.

China is it's own animal too because trade deficits with Canada, Mexico, EU at least you're dealing with political and military allies. China is a hostile nation and you're literally enabling them to build massive economic capabilities some of which stretch into military and political capabilities.. And getting very little in return.

Anyway. I'll leave it at that, I feel like this convo might go right over your head.

It's not my head it's going over. I'm just not buying Trump's bullshit marketing material.

Canada is America's biggest trading partner. Trump's USMCA is going to go away and be replaced by a 25% increase on everything crossing the border. Trump has managed to convince people that the cheap shit they buy on Amazon is the only place they're going to see the rate hike hurt them. Meanwhile the price of cars is going to go up 25% and people think that's a win for them, lol.

Cars won't go up 25% (because of this) SN bet?

I doubt a 25% broad tariff on Canadian goods ever gets implemented. He's bringing Canada and Mexico back to negotiating table to renegotiate a new free trade deal thats more in favor of USA, he already renegotiated nafta and he's just doing it again.

He will use the tariffs in Mexico to fix border issue, no way Mexico fixes anything for Trump if he throws a blanket 25% tariff on them.

I don't know what he's posturing for in Canada? But whatever it is he will probably get it but we won't get 25% tariffs (or if we do it'll be very short lived to bring Canada/mex to negotiating table).

Anyway a 25% tariff on Canadian cars wouldn't mean 25% increase in price of cars in USA... That's a moronic take.. It would mean manufacturing being moved from Canada to the USA.

1) It takes years to build factories. 2) A car assembled in America is made mostly with foreign sources parts.

There's a reason Elon is trying to talk him out of this nonsense.

Why? Did he get fleeced last time?
