Just checked online, for the very lightest (ultralight) class of aircraft no pilot's license is required in the USA.

Specifically, the restrictions are: "less than 5 US gal (19 L) fuel capacity, empty weight of less than 254 pounds, a top speed of 55 kn (63 mph; 102 km/h), and a maximum stall speed not exceeding (24 kn (28 mph; 44 km/h)). May only be flown over uncongested areas."

I'd still get lessons though, lol.

I didn’t doubt him about the license and the details, I just don’t think it’s a simple thing to just jump in and run to the store if your buddy has a landing strip
 
An ant mill, also known as an ant death spiral.
