German is not a Latin language. It is considerably harder for an English speaker to learn than a Latin language would be, despite the shared genetic history (i.e. they evolved from the same proto language) between English and German.

Instead you're roughly 50% based on Latin influenced languages, and using a mainly Latin based alphabet for the past 500 years.

To make it very simple: Think dialects, and one everybody pretty much can speak cause it's taught in school, so we can communicate. But every area has its own dialect as well that can sound very different.
Unless you are not talking about standard high German, but I'm assuming you are. Otherwise it really gets a bit tedious.
