Thing is, America has always done this, they were always quiet about it up until now but Trump seems to want to brag about his conquest. Folks used be fed some bogus humanitarian angle like 'helping the Kurds' or 'spreading freedom and democracy'so the public would have some stomach for it, but Trump is causing them to feel ashamed. You could always figure out what was going on in these conflicts if you really wanted to but Trump is laying it bare for everyone to see

Syria actually has a pretty paltry oil patch but denying it and their wheat to them will help starve and freeze the population and prevent the country from rebuilding. Also the proceeds can be used to help fund Islamist rebel groups and keep the conflict going.
