I have good news. I just searched Golden Corral's website and there is exactly one location in my county 25 miles away. I think I may need to check that out. What do you think the hostess would say if I said I am not here to eat, but rather to observe.

Nah, the only one around is a ways away. I’d be more apt to hit the Chinese buffet or all you can eat sushi.
