General Watched (heard) a guy splat from 20 stories on Thursday in Chicago...

My wife and I went to Chicago this past week to see the EPL Summer League matches. We did the architectural boat tour starting at 1:30pm on Thursday. Boat guide was talking about buildings, obviously, and mentioned that the London House has a really nice rooftop bar where you can get great views of the river and architecture.

We got off the boat ride around 3pm and decided to go check it out. Had a couple of drinks at the rooftop bar and then headed down to the river walk to get snacks and drinks. This was about 4pm.

A few hours, several drinks, and many appetizers later, we walked back up to street level. When we reached the street, there was clearly something wrong. You could feel a strange vibe as soon as we reached the street. People were huddled together, pointing, talking in what seemed to be excited tones.

I heard a lady scream, and looked up just in time to see a person falling about halfway down from a 20 story building.

I didn't initially process what I had just seen. But the sound, which was similar, but also dissimilar to a gunshot, I will never forget.

First picture is not mine. Was taken by someone across the street apparently. But shared to give context.

Second photo is my view from the rooftop bar just a few hours before he fell.

Third photo is to give perspective of where we were at when he fell. He fell just near where you see the ambulance in that photo.

Notice the spire that he is standing under in the first photo and where that spire is in the second photo. He fell from maybe 30ft from where we were just a few hours before.

I didn't experience the anxiety of watching him on the ledge and waiting to see him fall, like many others did. There were some very, unfortunately, traumatized people on the ground near us that had that experience. I just caught the image of him falling and then hearing the sound. Very fucking surreal.

That's terrible. I can't imagine that. I'm sorry you had to experience that.

RIP to the person that jumped.

If anyone ever feeling that low, reach out to someone. Please.
That's the problem. People either don't reach out or when they do, it's generally minimized and responded to with bullshit positive lifestyle quips. There are people that no one gives a fuck about plain and simple and they know it.

i have seen it happen too . years ago i made a thread on here when my neighbor decided to jump off the building . he went down 6 floors and didnt completely die .he landed on a small retaining wall and sidewalk area.now he is a vegetable

It's weird, it's one of the few things I won't joke about. It was around 30 years ago. Walked out going to lunch with a few guys just in time to watch some one fall down into the street in front of us. It was a nice hotel. She checked in, sent herself flowers and jumped off the balcony.

After responding to hundreds of suicides in my career the only conclusion I came to was it will never make sense to someone not in the middle of it.

As a young medic I would sometimes see older solid medics just get almost irrationally angry about it.
Took me another 5 years or so to understand... it starts to feel personal in a way, like this asshole made a mess just for me.

Damn. I always wondered why people have to do such things in public. I guess they want their body found instead of Thelma and Louseing it off the Grand Canyon.

People have lost a grip on rationality at that point of suicide. They've drifted so far out of orbit that they lose any connection at all. It's strange how you lose the ability to empathize even though you can intellectualize.

I totally get that. When reading this my initial reaction is what a selfish prick. No thought for how all the people who witnessed this will have an impact on them. Not to mention the clean up.

I've read that it fucks the brain up sort of like addiction. With addiction it's sort of like drowning and needing air. It must happen.

These poor people are so lost they no longer believe there is another option. They have to do it.

My mom killed herself. I won't say it surprised me. How she did it, when she did it, and the note she left fucked me up big time. I've never been the same and probably won't ever be. I understand the pain she was in to a degree because she passed some of the bullshit she dealt with growing up onto us kids. She had a tough upbringing and never really resolved it. She lost her husband. She was alone a lot and addicted to drugs and alcohol and did a really good job of shoving people away.

Idk I can't make heads or tails of it. Best I can do is pray for her and everyone else like her and if I detect these patterns in someone try and reach out and touch their heart.

Luckily no one close to me has ever killed themselves. I sometimes think when someone does this type of thing, at least they didn't take anyone else with them
