What about that powerbomb KO?

What's everyone's thoughts on Smith's powerbomb KO?

It was definitely cool to watch, but it does seem odd that if an opponent is grappling you and you hit him with a small punch to the back of the head, you get a warning, possibly leading to a point deduction. And I understand the need to protect the back of the head. But in this case, you can slam a guy from six feet in the air directly to the back of his head, and then follow it immediately with a vicious headbutt, and no harm no foul?

The headbutt alone should probably make it a no contest at least. I'm not sure what to think about this one. I'm usually on board with the less rules the better, but this one is interesting.

As someone whose been rampage slammed in sparring gone wild I can say its devastating. I was fucked up for a couple days and I never went out, just blacked out and woke up in a gnarly scramble that I had no idea how it started.
Or even where I was.

I don't think it should be banned, no different than a solid hiptoss or schoolyard head wheel.

I like no spiking on the head, thats a crippler and if legal people would train to main.

Only thing currently that i think should be banned is the oblique kick. Its another career ender and completely unnecessary in sport fighting.

I saw everyone raving about this so watched it, in fucking horror.

headbutts are illegal, so under the rules the match was fought, it's a clear disqualification.

seeing a guy dead-on-the-floor knocked out and then the winner throw extra punches is fucking disgusting.

every time I point out how dangerous and unnecessary those punches are, there's always some tough guy saying you should keep trying to kill your unconscious opponent until the ref literally drags you away. fuckinell.

the oblique kick is completely unacceptable as well.

this is mma sport fighting. if you want that nhb vibe, leave the sporting arena and go find KOTS.

I’ll go ahead and play devils advocate. This is not a new move and people have shown how to avoid being slammed on their head. Let go of the choke. What is being argued is like saying someone should not be allowed to throw a cross because it could break someone’s jaw, render them unconscious, cte, etc. when you should be blocking it or moving your head.

Slamming your opponent from a wrestling hold on their head is illegal, but the ruling from a guy defending a jui jitsu hold is it's legal, the theory being all the guy getting slammed has to do is let go, and he would not have been slammed.

I don’t like that slam but you can also let go as we have seen people do against rampage, for instance after that one he completed.
Let go or at least take a second outside of class to think “do I want my spine, neck and brain destroyed over a submission that I won’t finish nor will I physically recover from or best case scenario, get only a serious concussion?”

That guy could have easily let go and been fine.

I'd like to see kicks from a downed opponent to a downed opponent.

I have been pointing out this and all the many other contradictory rules in MMA for the past 25 years. Slams to the back of the head and head kicks that mostly land on the back of the head are some of the biggest contradictions...

Old Fart Alert: I remember when the UFC allowed groin shots, soccer kicks to downed opponents, head butts AND you had to fight 3 times in one night. Oh yeah, and it was bare-knuckle. AND they got paid PEANUTS! AND zero testing for recreational and performance-enhancing drugs. No rounds too. I think they should allow head-butts. Lethwei does. That ref should be fired. 100%.
