NHB started as a pure spectacle in terms of the way it way promoted, but in the actual putting together of cards, some due diligence was done to make sure competitors were semi-reputable and the meritocratic nature of the tournament meant the cream rose to the top. Still, the marketing sold characters so we could root for different participants in individual contests. Following the tournament era, there were years spent trying to make NHB into MMA with progressively standardized rules so it could be recognized as a sport. The marketing followed suit, presenting promotions as legitimate and fighters as athletes. I'd argue that for the past 10 years, we've progressed into a third era where self-promotion is as important as skill and the promotions are mostly focused on selling the spectacle of MMA. In this case, the fighters personas or interpersonal disagreements (however manufactured) are critical to building cards. In practice, this means that meritocracy is a bit more relative, though fortunately the best are often still fighting the best.

So what will be MMA's next phase? I was convinced that the era of it going back to being pushed as a mundane sport was more or less dead until the ESPN deal the UFC announced, which made me think WME at least could be pivoting back toward that direction despite their other moves that would suggest the contrary. Bellator made great strides under this model in the Bjorn Rebney era, but under Scott Coker they've shifted to a mixed model of spectacle and sport likely to compete with the UFC. Do you think the sport will stay in a mixed mode forever or tilt in one direction or another or will it become something new altogether?

The more the sport tries to remove the internal spectacle, whether that comes from the fighters or from company guided nu-metal/flames, the more there will need to be external media providing spectacle if the entire MMA industry wishes to keep eyes on it.

Every single one of us gets bought into the drama. Hate the heel? You still tune in. Conor attacks a bus, hate the act, but the ticket demand goes up.

The next phase will depend on what the companies do. I don't think they can afford to go fully cut-and-dry sport only yet. There is a passive allowance and encouraging of the self promoting and even bad behavior that gives the orgs plausible deniability.

The shift will happen if third-party media gives the viewers the drama and story and encouragement to be emotionally interested at various levels. The more the stories can be promoted outside of the official show, the more the official show will become cut and dry sport. With all of the various media and low barrier to entry, I think this is where we will go eventually.

It'll just be like boxing: gone are the days the UFC can sell a bunch of PPVs and tickets just on the UFC name.

If there are big names and big fights, it'll be in the mainstream consciousness. If there aren't, it won't.

Pretty much
Only addition I will say is that unlike boxing, people call MMA "UFC", so the brand is still worth something.
Try watching Bellator in a bar with casuals or non fans & they call it UFC

They were smart in that aspect early on (first owners)
Having a name that is descriptive to fighting helped brand.

I think that era is already here. If not just folding over into that. Numbers haven’t been great this year. Lowest in fact right?

Then got Daner getting desperate by admitting “Yeah we are trying GSP vs Diaz” and the Conor dolly thing to generate interest. They are trying to be over the top because being credible has come and gone.
