Sometimes I honestly wonder if his death may not have been natural, as he was spouting some really high profile conspiracy stuff in some really tense times

Dangerous figure in the public eye, his life showed that already in spades
he refused medication and surgery, and died from an easily curable condition.

^ I thought he was in japanese prison for longer than 2 weeks... I thought it was several years

Lets confirm. He sure looked like shit when he came out, there is video of him upon release getting on a private jet to Iceland. I thought that footage was fascinating

Hoping you're not being facetious, & agreeing with me that his story is a great one.
he was in an immigration detention facility for 9 months, but his allegations of 'torture' were from the 16 days he spent in 'jail'.

Thanks, I'll trust ya :D

why does it seem like you're trivializing that? 9 months + 16 days in detention is harsh. If he says he was tortured why would you be suspicious?

That Russian guy Kasparov, he was one tough guy. Under constant pressure of punishment if he didn't perform well for the USSR.

Bobby Fischer never said he was tortured, for one. He said he didn't want to get extradited to the US because he thought he would be tortured (a legit fear). He said the Japanese gov't was corrupt gangsters (also legit). He also said he was roughed up when he was arrested and chipped a tooth (totally possible). But the confluence of those statements, along with his other CT-heavy statements, fit nicely together with a "Bobby Fischer Super-Genius Spy" biography. But it's not real. He was a brilliant chess player, but he was unable to sustain that level of performance. Most likely because the same mental aberrations that made him so effective at chess made it impossible to have normal human relationships.

In reality, this is GW Bush going full-Lannister and paying Daddy's debt. GW was facing a tough close election when Fischer was detained, and when Bush won the election the Japanese denied his asylum claim.

Fischer clowned Papa, so Junior called on his old buddies in Japan to make Bobby's life miserable for a year. If Iceland hadn't stepped in, who knows what the Bush's end game was going to be. Once you're in the system, it's really hard to get out.

I think that's why I consider Kasparov the greatest human to play chess. Guys like Kasparov and Karelin always inspired me. The hardest thing to do in any competition is to be the best consistently when people expect you to be the best. When you think about how the USSR was collapsing around him, the weight of national pride that he carried, the consequences of failure (including the consequences for his family and friends), and his ability to do it all at the highest level of competition for 20 years...

It took real greatness, not just overwhelming skill or perfect play, to be Kasparov.

You keep trying to discredit him, but all the great info in your posts just seem to make the guy even more fascinating, lol

i'm not trying to discredit him. It's just that the popular mythos around the guy is really inaccurate, and I think in both directions. Kind of like Edgar Allen Poe or Howard Hughes...there's a lot of romanticizing of their psychological difficulties and aggrandizing of their quirks.

Mostly I feel sorry for Bobby Fischer. For all his success and notoriety, I'm sure his life was very hard.
