Is there anyone knowledgeable of both sports who can answer this question for me - How difficult would it be for someone who grew up on American football to learn the rules of rugby well enough to enjoy watching a game?

it took me all of 5 minutes to figure out what was going on for the most part...i highly suggest you give it a go.
much MUCH better than american football. kinda surprised it's not a thing here. the tackling was awesome.
best part was the ball keeps moving or is in play pretty much at all times from what i saw today. i liked it because there weren't ref's blowing whistles every other minute for holding or whichever momentum killing penalty that american football has.

i don't know any of the exact rules about off sides or those type things..but it wasn't difficult to enjoy watching.
