It sure is amazing to see the depth of public ignorance surrounding a simple martial arts technique used in hundreds of countries for hundreds of years

The unfortunate demise of poor mr. George Floyd has opened a national dialogue about the use of force on a suspect but I would like to focus exclusively on the knee ride and its potential to asphyxiate someone

As an MMA guy with a primary background in wrestling I rarely used knee rides in competition but would occasionally apply them at my security job

The plain and simple fact is people are now suggesting that the way the cop had his knee placed on George Floyd was asphyxiating him as in cutting off the air and or blood flow to the brain

Outside of law enforcement it's likely only the Jiu-Jitsu Community understands the Dynamics of a knee ride

I know it's a sensitive subject but it's definitely one worth discussing

Lots of people have heart problems. Given that, there's better ways of subduing a suspect.
I think the cop is gonna claim he had fear of covid and thats why he kept this knee ride after floyd stopped moving

it was a brutal and unnecessary tactic but that hold down definitely won't kill someone who isn't extremely sick to begin with and there's no way you can expect the cops to assess someone's health as they try to subdue them

Its was unfortunate but the suggestion that the cop intentionally killed Floyd with a murderous technique is complete bull intended to create violence

I also train BJJ and work security. Potential asphyxiation was talked about at length in my training before being granted my licence. They don't even want you laid on people in my country much less kneeling. This would be considered a last resort if my life was in danger, similar to chokeholds. Now in BJJ, I love a bit of neon neck/belly.

In all likelihood he didn't intend to kill him but the guy was subdued and cuffed, he didn't need to kneel on the back of his neck.

it's likely your country doesn't have a drug war that precipitates this kind of scenario

unfortunately just because an individual is cuffed doesnt mean they are incapable of resisting arrest and when you add the factor of a deadly Airborne virus that is poorly understood by modern science plus a hostile crowd heckling the arresting officers this kind of scenario begins to make more sense than ever before

If the police had a report on this character certifying his violent criminal history then I can't convict the officer of wrongdoing even though I think he should have shown more concern for the criminal by relocating his knee to Floyd's midback or better yet shifting to his hands to shoulder/midback and putting his knee on floyds hips... initially I falted the officer for not rolling Floyd over or sitting him up but after I factored in the covid senario I cant consider his actions CRIMINAL

I would demote him at most just to prove to the american public that their emotional knee jerk reaction to relatively basic police procedure is not going to force our hand and change arrest procedures to the will and whim of the highly impression public

an individual could die if they were simply running from the police when they had the medical conditions and level of intoxication of Floyd... if we allow the American public and their social media panic button to adjust arrest procedure to whatever is the most safe for the criminal then we will have a scenario where the police aren't even allowed to pursue criminals anymore

What is by far the most entertaining aspect of this entire scenario is the criminal MARTYRDOM tactic the american Democrats are trying to ride to the White House as it is likely to backfire and have the exact opposite effect

What is most frightening and concerning about this scenario is the visceral hate and conspiratorial distrust so much of the AMERICAN public maintains for law enforcement and the government as a whole

If I had to come up with a B movie plot for Rambo 5 I would write this script up as a Russian plot to de stabilize the american government through psychological warfare using social media propaganda based on Criminal MARTYRDOM

Yes, I completely agree this is really a sensitive subject but we should have to talk about this. Discuss this with our instructors and our colleagues. This is very unfortunate with Floyd. But we understand the dynamics of a knee ride to make the better BJJ.
