1. basic car care: how to change a tire/change their own oil
2. know basic power tools: circular saw/drill/table saw/sander/router table
3. basic home repair: unclog a toilet/replace a toilet/install outlets/replace locks
4. be able to fish and clean it (I just learned this year = cleaning)

Lets see what we come up with. If someone doesn't know some of this lets help them out. Ive had a shit load of jobs but still want to learn more.

I can't tie anything besides my shoes and a tie. I swear that is one of the hardest things on the planet. I am borderline full blown retarded if someone hands me a rope and says "secure that". That must be on the same side of the brain as learning another language.

I learned a few on construction sites but learned a lot of great ones at fire academy. IMO just find 4-6 that you can do blind folded and find a way to apply them to the task at hand. There's a ton of ways to secure an object for a lift but depending on the shape and path I'll do a combo of clove hitch/half hitch usually. Tying to ropes together? I favor square knot or figure 8 follow through. Tbh its just kind of fun to sit by a camp fire or where ever and pracitce with a drink in hand then after find a use for it like hanging empties, securing the wife/gf inside the tent or trailer for a good laugh, sneak one around your kids toy/foot them call them over.....lol for days.

I don't agree with all these. On modern cars you need a degree in car fixing to change oil. Why would you ever replace an entire toilet? Why is fishing so important and hunting isn't high on the list? This seems like survivalist stuff, which I think is crucial for some, not really 'urban' man though.

I'll go with:

Navigate the Internet.

Properly invest money and grow it.

Set up home networking and have an aptitude for configuring technology at your house. (tv's, dvrs, low energy solutions, security)

How to properly shave.

Speak at least one different language.

At least one expert skill in whatever you do. Every man needs to be a specialist in at least one area.

I'd also like to find out what area the men on this board are actually specialists in....

Why is a blue collar trade important?

Some of these choices seem pretty arbitrary

I can't do most of this shit.

My crowning achievement imo was completing dead or alive 3 on the super rock hard hell difficulty. Took me like 100 try and I never played it since.

I also did 13 sambucas in one hit and fell over and broke my nose. Diddnt do that since either..

Oh I also drove 150 mph in my car. I think everyone should go at least 125 if they can

YouTube will show you how to change the oil on any car out there. I've only had to buy one "specialized" tool on any of my cars. You will save yourself a lot of money. I do both cars for under $50.
Toilets- wax rings go bad. People used to buy colored toilets. More efficient. Bigger bowls....
I didn't say hunting shouldn't be on the list but it's easier to learn how to fish than hunt in most areas. Walking down the street with a fishing pole will get you a lot less trouble than with a .308.

The list is entirely subjective. I don't think anyone is any more of a man because they can speak another language. I've traveled the world and barely speak English some days. A good guidebook and translator app has got me pretty far. Don't get me wrong though, I'd give up a lot to have a C3PO database of languages and knowledge.

Why is fighting important? Why is anything important?
I think blue collar work humbles people. Not everyone needs an investment banker, stock broker, analyst, ...
But eventually EVERYONE needs a plumber, baker, mechanic, HVAC,...
I work with a certain guy that has his MBA. I have a BS (at least one has their PhD). He thought he was better than everyone else because of this. We reminded him that he is doing the exact same job as us but we have less college loans. He's coming around.
The list is entirely subjective. If you want to add something have at it.

I didn't say fighting was important. But I certainly don't think experience in a single blue collar trade means much of anything.

Whilst I may not agree, I can understand people choosing survival skills or car repair. I don't understand how a having a trade that everyone will need is useful at all, if the supply for that skill set far out weighs the demand.

My suggestion for the list IS fighting. And swimming. Because they can save your life and if not yours, then someone else's.
