China has a bad reputation in Asia too. We don't all appreciate being lumped in with the stuff they do. Nothing to do with anti-chinese. The Chinese are proud to be Chinese and love what they are but I'm not Chinese and I don't like what they like. Right off the bat Asians know that when someone says something about you being Chinese it's almost always meant in a negative.

Let me just say this.
This whole idea that people see themselves as a combined racial identity like White people or Asian people is not exclusive everywhere. Maybe That's normal in US where the average person can be several different ethnicities but still under one racial umbrella. Maybe even Asian Americans think of themselves as a collective ethnicity of Asian but in Asia we don't. We see each other as distinct groups of people with our own pluses and minuses.
We also understand that insults against Asians by Westerners are primarily targeted at the Chinese so insults against the Asian people by non-Asians tend to be Chinese related like go back to China, ching chong, chingy, herro preeze etc. so that if somebody start making comments about Chinese towards you It can be interpreted as racist and I don't think you can disagree that the granny didn't like Chinese/Asian people and her remark was intended to be racist, such that being Chinese was the insult and as I'm not Chinese I found it even more insulting but it would have been insulting if I were Chinese in that context as well. There are just so many negative stereotypes about Chinese that being called Chinese has become an insult.

This deserves a long complicated answer but people are generally not worse but different and the more different the more ire they receive from people who are different from them.
The Chinese do tend to give Asians a bad name but this is also complicated and deserves a long answer. A short and general synopsis is that at one time China was the heartbeat of Asia and everyone would be proud to be associated with China. Both Chinese and Japanese had long and complicated exposures to westerners, however where Japan has won likes in the last 100 years and China toppled greatly in respect happened around the time they abandoned Confucanism. Their transition into modernity was to dump all that was Chinese antiquity for new and better cultural revolution. This changed the core values of Chinese society and you see it in their manners and this gets alot of ire from nearly every other people on earth, not just westerners. So in a simple general answer that is why to be called Chinese is offensive to other Asians. Yes we might look similar but our beliefs and core values are different and we don't admire the (new) Chinese way.
