Manchester attack latest: woman arrested in connection with the attack as police probe 'network'

"Community did warn about Abedi's extreme views, worker says More details are emerging about Salman Abedi.

A Muslim community worker has said that members of the public called the police anti-terrorism hotline warning about the Manchester suicide bomber’s extreme and violent views several years ago.

It is also understood that Abedi was in Manchester earlier this year when he told people of the value of dying for a cause and made hardline statements about suicide operations and the conflict in Libya.

The community worker – who did not want to be identified – said two people who knew Salman Abedi at college made separate calls to the police.

They had been worried that “he was supporting terrorism” and had expressed the view that “being a suicide bomber was OK.”

The friends had argued with him, telling him he was wrong but had become so concerned they contacted the police.

The community worker said, “all of the publicity is about Muslims not coming forward and this shows that they are coming forward and expressing their concerns.”

The calls are thought to have been made around five years ago after Abedi left school, where he was known to have smoked marijuana and mixed with gangs in south Manchester. "

Interesting to try to figure out how this will play for May's re-election bid. Tories are typically the law & order party but Leigh @Leigh and RedDragonUK @RedDragonUK pointed out to me that media is mentioning this happened on their watch. Labour and seems to be responding well and the Lib Dems may split some of the difference. Thoughts on this from other Brits?

Team Bisping @Team Bisping benjo0101 @benjo0101 Joemacka @Joemacka Zeph @Zeph are you in UK?

My first thought when they said the troops were deployed was she's pooped her pants that she needs to show strength. She's got to. Her cuts will be brought up so she has to retaliate. I'm not against it but you can read it like a book.

Honestly our country is going down the shitter politically. I get embarrassed talking about it. Makes me unpatriotic.

Right now though, I'm not in the UK and I'm nervous. I'm a simple traveling guy. I go to a lot of high profile/busy places for events and dinner. And I'm never scared of this sort of thing. My attitude is, fuck em they'd want me to be scared. But I'm a tad nervous. Having no confidence in our leaders of any type doesn't help either. I can't think of a single person in a position of leadership outside of the boy scouts that I would trust to lead us in a time of panic.

Theresa May is the opposite of strong on law and order. She has destroyed the terms and conditions of serving police officers and the budget cuts have decimated the service. The Tories pretend to be strong by bringing in legislation but thats no good if there is no one to investigate and deal with it.

There is another clip somewhere, where she is warned that cutting the numbers will result in a paramilitary style response being needed......

I read yesterday that 3,500 people are under watch in Britain for being potential terrorists, & between 400 & 1,000 have gone to fight for ISIS and returned. WTF is going on over there..

But surely she knew that. It almost goes without saying.

I hope she loses something because of this. She needs to feel the wrath big time, that party make some awful choices for the "real" people

Sadly nothing will happen as we have no opposition that can land a blow.

I think the event will solidify May's position as prime minister, i say this as someone who will vote labour but it seems when countries are targeted, it pushes the populace to voted for 'what they know' and the 'safer' option especially if the government response has been adequate.

I hope Labour are voted in, the abolition of tuition fees & re-nationalisation of energy / transport sectors would do wonders to the country, a push towards government found in nordic (the nordic model) countries would be amazing.

I'm expecting conservatives to win by at least 5 points.

That's an interesting question. Do you have a link on that? If I were guessing, I'd say many left to participate in the "Arab Spring" uprisings in places like Libya or Syria which their government supported and then after seeing the disarray the UK/US government backed rebels were in they probably linked up with the significantly better armed and better organized ISIS troops. Then they saw the people they fought and bled alongside getting bombed by US drone strikes or found themselves fighting a 2 front war against the bungling rebels and Assad or Gaddafi loyalists and started thinking ISIS might have a point with their anti-Western rhetoric. The whole situation has been a mess and recipe for disaster since day one. I doubt this is the end of it as the destruction of ISIS will beget someone to fill the vacuum just as the decline of al qaeda gave rise to ISIS. Add in online radicalization and the watch lists are liable to keep growing.
