Evander Holyfield

Beat more credible guys than Mike Tyson

Worthy named opponents Evander beat-

MIKE TYSON
Buster Douglas
MIKE TYSON
Michael Dokes
George Foreman
Larry Holmes
Riddick Bowe
Ray Mercer
Michael Moorer
Hasim Rahman

You might be thinking of pointing out that two guys on that list beat Evander Holyfield. You're right, they did. And when Evander rematched both, he beat both. Something Mike Tyson has NEVER done, avenge a loss.

Evander Holyfield=beat more credible guys than Mike Tyson, beat Mike Tyson as well, twice, as well as beat Buster Douglas who was the first to beat Mike Tyson just 8 months prior, before Tyson was in prison.

Lennox Lewis
Beat more credible guys than Mike Tyson did.

Worthy opponents worthy of being mentioned-
MIKE TYSON
Frank Bruno
Tommy Morrison
Oliver Mccall
Ray Mercer
Andrew Golata
Shannon Briggs
Evander Holyfield
David Tua
Hasim Rahman
Vitali Klitscho

Two of those guys have wins against Lennox Lewis. When Lennox rematched them both, he beat them both, something Mike Tyson was never able to do.

Maybe, but I'm still giving it to Tyson because Iron Mike Fucking Tyson.

They even named a bird company after him because he flew the coupe.

That fight shoulda happened instead of Douglas dammit.
Buster ruined everything like a buster.

Tyson captured people's attention and Imagination. It was a show and he was the star. Much like Conor is doing now.

I think conor will fight a few times more and that will be a really short career....good on $$$ but short on credibility...better for brain though

To this day I remember the Holyfield fight and my one friend who was very knowledgeable about boxing shot me down when I saw Holyfield bullying Tyson.....I said “shit, Holyfield is bitching him and fuck, he’s gonna ko him” early on in the fight.....
His reply, in an arrogant, demeaning way was “I wouldn’t say that’s gonna happen, let’s be real”

Thank you

Tyson's best wins are probably a LHW Spinks and 39 yr old Larry Holmes? :p surely no one rates him as one of the greatest HW's ever

True but Mike was able to capture the attention of the masses. His fights were events that people came together to partake in...many who couldn't have cared less about boxing. That is what made him so intriguing...well that, and him being a straight up killer.

He's a boxing legend because of the impact he had in the hearts and minds of men (lol) and not so much for his actual boxing accomplishments. He was (and still is?) the youngest HW champion of all time but when you look at his opponents back then you can see how he managed to pull it off. He basically came into the sport at a time when it was transitioning from one great era to the next one which was pretty great too in hindsight, and once that division got some quality, Tyson fell off (the rape conviction didn't help ofc)

Hard to disagree with any of that.

Prime Tyson > Prime Ali
I don't think we ever saw Prime Tyson. We saw Tyson just entering his prime while still being trained by Kevin Rooney, then came the madness that ensued after he left Rooney (his last connection to D'Amato), i.e. lapses in training, and failing to work on issues noted by Rooney earlier in Mike's career, like his susceptibility to uppercuts. The non-stop partying and loss to Buster Douglas was followed by a stretch in prison during what would've been his prime years as a boxer, had everything gone according to plan. In the end, we got a version of Mike that was never quite the same as the guy we watched on that initial title run. Lennox Lewis is probably the greatest heavyweight of his generation. Larry Holmes would be the greatest heavyweight of his generation, post-Ali, pre-D'Amato era Tyson's relatively short reign.

I agree with some of this.

Mike Tyson definitely had an aura about him.

For most of my adolescent life and early adult life, I was like everyone else thinking that Mike Tyson was just so fiercesome and imposing and surely the best hw around.

I think like majority of most fans, Don King is who we should credit for the Hype of Mike Tyson. Don King, say what you will, could promote fights. Sure he's probably a scumbag, but without Don King, I doubt Mike Tyson would be thought of how he is today, which is one of the greatest hw boxers of all time when in reality he's not even best of his generation. That's Don King's doing, not Tyson's. Tyson beat whatever bums King lined up for him and did so in brutal fashion making it easier to promote him. Once Tyson stepped up his competition, you saw what happened.

Conor McGregor however, I feel did more self promotion for himself. Conor also came along at the perfect time. UFC/MMA needing superstars, no big named Irish fighters, his charisma and ability to hype fights coupled with actual legit skill, his road to stardom was a little different than Tyson's.

Totally agree.
I had to retract my "winner" in case I'm wrong; I'm leaving room for error.
But this is exactly how I see it, as far as Tyson's prime. I don't know about his susceptibility to uppercuts, I saw one of his biggest weaknesses as leaving his feet when he threw.

I was basing the susceptibility to uppercuts on comments made by Rooney both during and immediately after some of Mike's fights. Fights that he won by the way, so even in victory, Rooney and team Tyson (pre-Don King) were still focused on improving Mike's boxing.

I will say that Mike is a very small heavy, so even though he is 3rd best of his era, his alltime rating is still strong because he was almost fighting a weightclass up in theory. Like Mike in his prime was probably more of a cruiserweight sized guy, maybe if Mike was at cruiser fulltime he would be the cruiserweight GOAT and maybe top 10 alltime, but due to being the 3rd best heavy, he is more like top 40 alltime or so.

I think Lennox is the heavy GOAT in terms of skill and if you had a tourny of all them in their prime , all alive like a tournament in paradise, Lennoz is the guy I pick to win.
