Police: Dallas officer mistakes apartment for own, kills man

The responding officers administered first aid to the victim, whom the Dallas County medical examiner's office identified as 26-year-old Botham Jean, a native of the Caribbean island country of St. Lucia who attended college in Arkansas and worked for accounting and consulting firm PwC. Jean, who was black, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Police haven't released the name or race of the officer, who had arrived home in-uniform and who wasn't injured. She will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.

Authorities haven't said how the officer got into Jean's home, or whether his door was open or unlocked. The apartment complex is just a few blocks from Dallas' police headquarters.

Jean grew up in St. Lucia and attended Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, where he often led campus worship services before graduating in 2016, the school said in a statement. That July, he went to work for PwC in risk assurance.
wtf.

Just chilling at home and a cop shows up and kills you in your house?

How could she even mistake the wrong apartment when she came in?? Didn't realize all the furniture was wrong?!

The fact that they interviewed several people that lived there and the race of the shooter hasnt been released means the odds if her being white are slim. Waco will avoid being burned down.

“I always saw Botham around campus,” Amy Johnson said. “He always wanted to lead in chapel in whatever way he could. He was always so nice and so kind. He was definitely a light at Harding — one who I could never forget. Prayers for his family and friends.”

Jean was a member of the Good News Singers, a resident assistant, an intern for the Rock House campus ministry, and a leader in Sub T-16 men’s social club, the university said.

“At Lectureship one year, I asked him to lead singing one night. Because of the subject, there was a particular old hymn that I asked him if he would mind leading,” President Bruce McLarty said. “He didn’t say anything about not knowing the song, but he had never heard it before in his life. He came up that evening and was just smiling and excited about leading it. He told me he had never heard the song before, but that day, he called back to St. Lucia and asked his grandmother to teach him that old hymn on the phone. So he shared it with us at Lectureship that night, and it was a truly special moment.”

To be fair, she did make it home.
It just wasn't her home.

So breaking and entering and murder gets you a leave?...

I'm going to make a wild guess that it turns out there was some previous relationship between the two of them.

Actually you don’t even need training. Most departments will issue your equipment and have you out on the streets with an FTO the day you’re accepted. A friend of mine didn’t go to the academy until about 3 months after starting. My dad’s department had an officer shot and killed during a traffic stop before he could make the academy. It’s crazy. It’s the same with COs and jailers.

And how do you not positively ID your target before shooting them. I really wish there was video to see how this insane shit played out. Imagine fucking dudes up in Fortnight and a cop just rolling into your apartment. You’re all “wtf” and they just shoot you.

police localization is a major problem in the United States. It's largely unidentified but I think that has to go away eventually for us to ever get better.

Small towns under 25 thousand people make up a disproportionate number of fatal police shootings.

Small poorly funded poorly-trained departments are more likely to shoot. The system should probably be centralized.

Something similar happened to me and my wife. I came home early from work one night and found a 20 year old Latin kid porking my wife. Anyway, it turned out he had accidentally went to the wrong house and then mistaken MY wife for HIS wife. She wasn’t wearing her glasses and she thought HE was ME!
You can imagine all the confusion. We all had a good laugh about it.

Is it normal for the news to make such a point on the race of those involved?
