Wound up losing my match by calf slicer. Great event, I would do a matched event like this again for sure.

Lost two in a row. First match I got caught in a guillotine 3:00 in or so. Second match went the distance and he won by a few points.

I learned a lot. Biggest thing is how different training is from comp. No surprise I just gotta step up my level in the gym and stay calm.

There another tourney in town in two weeks that's round robin sub only so I'm gonna sign up and try to redeem myself ;)

Good on you!
Losing sucks, obviously but you're in a good place about it.
Get'em in two weeks!

That's awesome, way to go out there and leave it on the mats.... Better than most of the loudmouths in here. Be cautiously aggressive and play your game.... Be first in everything (takedowns, attacks, escapes, etc).... I'm looking forward to hearing how you do

While losing sucks, it gives you things to work on and helps get you fired up for next time. Good job getting out there and laying it on the line, better luck next competition.

Thanks guys.

I have a million questions but first one is the "be first" that I hear every time. My first match I was putting lots of forward pressure on him and when I went for the single it's how he eventually got my neck. The second match (same guy) I was not letting him back away and kept trapping him in the corner, he seemed to have no desire to get grips or shoot first, felt like he wanted to counter whatever I did. When you sense a guy doesn't want to lead and you know the TD is tough is being first still the priority? Is there a time and place you want to lure them in the go first and hopefully sprawl on them and work from there?

I think about “driving the bus” as opposed to being first, but the general idea is the same. Whomever is making decisions has a tactical advantage over the person reacting. I try to have a general plan about what I want to do, and stick to it. I hate pulling guard, so I will fight for a takedown or throw for a long time before I would pull. If the person looks like they are intent of shooting, I might try to force them into shooting on my better sprawling side, but more likely I would be looking for collar ties and snap downs.
If I ever feel myself get stuck in a loop of just reacting to what my opponent is doing, I will pick something and go for it just to try to change the rhythm of the match.

One of my matches from my last no gi comp. Blue belt absolute. Feather weight vs heavyweight. I had a few better matches recently in the gi but they are lost on my old phone

Christian, Michael, & Chloe are my teammates. Great matches. I wish I could've made it.
Small world. They plan to have more events there, it was a cool little venue tucked up in the loft of a huge steel building they build props in; you should come down to one of the events.
I learned when I posted the match to my Facebook that the guy I went against trained up to blue belt with a friend of mine who runs a school in MD.

I signed up for another tourney this weekend. It's a round robin sub only. Minimum 3 matches and max is 5. Hoping to redeem myself and get a tap or two.

^cool. I asked because that is the format at Grappling Industries events. The round robin format is nice- more matches, and it takes the luck of the draw out of the results.

Ya I'm curious to see how it all goes. Both my kids are in too and they're pumped. It's kill or be killed bro!
