You also get a preview of some people available before signing up. At a guess, based on the tiny selection I saw, I'd say that less than 25% were looking to cheat on a partner.

My email address is actually in the database.
I do a search of my email box and find a 2005 email saying "thanks, we've deleted your account".

I have no recollection of ever signing up for the site and the delete account message was unread.

I won't out put of the realm that I made an account to do a search or something 10 years ago when the site was a new taboo thing. But honestly I don't think I did. And the site doesn't require email confirmation to sign up, it just takes your email. Barack.obama@whitehouse.gov is in there too.

Apparently only people with credit cards in the system could contact each other. So those are the only real users. And about 95% don't seem legit.

But I'm sure in another 10 years ill be answering for this to someone despite the details here. Oh internet, you so crazy.

No doubt, I get the sentiment. I doubt anyone that gets divorced over the fake accounts. But that's hardly the real issue here, given the huge numbers of fake accounts and minimal number of apparent real users.

You can't even make contact without adding a CC apparently. It ignores 15 year old accounts, that apparently if deleted are still there. It ignores the lack of need for email verification to create an account.

I could imagine that at one point I signed up to snoop, but even then, I don't think so. Regardless, I, @ThatOneDude , and Obama are all cheating on our wives by the court of public opinion. Sort of highlights the lynch mob problem with assumptions. I'm sure Obama's is fake, at most mine could have been me looking up cheating ass locals in my small town, and we all know @ThatOneDude is a philandering ass. But we are all painted with the same brush thanks to the media portrayal here.

I'm actually not that worried about it. But its obnoxious and I can imagine some people can get in some real binds due to this simple math means you're guilty of a pretty terrible moral move.

Yeah, but to do know that differentiation is to require downloading a 10GB torrent, untar a compressed file, load that file into a databse manager of some sort, and then search the contents.

The sites that popped online overnght simply says, IS YOUR SPOUSES EMAIL IN THE ASHLEY MADISON LEAK!??!?! BAD NEWS YOUR SPOUSES EMAIL WAS FOUND!

That's what I'm getting at. And the media and twitter have already decided that if your email is in there, you are using the site to cheat. I actually had to dig around to figure out the credit card thing and lack of verification. I was confused how my email was even in there.

You must click "subscribe for notifcaions" and verify your email address. Then you can search to see if your email address is in this leak and many others. This means others can't go snooping on you, but you can see if your data has been compromised. They will update you for future hacks too if you are compromised then.

I'm not really worried either. I mean 10 years ago I was probably trying to shag anything that moved at the bar anyways. And I never used the site even if I did sign up.
But that lack of context is obnoxious. I've got nothing in my life that this could be more than a single conversation from being explained away.

No, I'm in beautiful British Columbia, but I would have moved to Ottawa in a heartbeat if I was a divorce lawyer right now............being that it was recently listed as the cheating capital of the world after the Ashley Maddison leak first became public knowledge. As it stands, i will remain in BC being broke and under educated, but staring at the glorious mountains around me and breathing some of the freshest air in the world!

I heard that too. Thing is, I've lived here my entire life, and have only ever met one person who uses it. Based on the couple guys here who have said they found their emails but never used the site, I'm thinking it's probably a case of fraud. Particularly in Ottawa's very politic heavy environment.
