Scoring systems we are familiar with (plus my own).

I re-watched the fight and scored according to PRIDE Rules, 10 Point Must and my own Point System

PRIDE Rules are simple for this one: Gus was beaten badly in the 4th and 5th rounds so based on strong finish and a close fight before that, Jones wins.

10 Point Must is muddy so this is where things get vague for people:
  • Gus definitely won the 1st. Pretty close though.
  • Gus could have won both the 2nd and 3rd but both were close enough that one of them could have gone to Jones.
  • Gus gets severely rocked in the 4th and is lucky that it happened more towards the end of the round.
  • Jones beats the shit out of Gus in the 5th.
Just going 10-9 for each round it all comes down to whether or not someone gives Jones either the 2nd or 3rd. Honestly though, the rounds Gus could have won (1-3) are not equal to the beating he took in the 4th and 5th. The 5th is a borderline 10-8 round.

Using the scoring system I developed a while ago, where each move is given a point value and strikes are awarded by rounds Gus loses:

Alexander Gustafsson
2 Takedowns = 1.0 points
General Striking Rounds 1, 2, 3 = 3.0 points
TOTAL = 4.0 POINTS

Jon Jones
1 Takedown = 0.5 point
General Striking Rounds 4 & 5 = 5.0 points
TOTAL = 5.5 POINTS

WINNER = JON JONES

The very clear thing that came out of that fight is that Jon has bad head movement and has A LOT of trouble with anyone with a reach close to his. This is why I postulated that Rumble was the one guy who would come into a fight with Jones as the favorite imo. Huge reach, decent take down defense and monstrous power that could easily land on Jones' stationary noggin'. Unfortunately, that fight will never be (or won't be with Rumble in top form).

Just judge a fight by a whole. This fight, along with every other close fight without a finish, should be considered a draw.

Tell me right now here Jones or Gus established an undeniable advantage. When I says undeniable, that's basically a finish b/c if you are to suggest the spinning elbow was an undeniable advantage, then you are basically suggesting anytime someone lands a spinning elbow the fight is then won.

I hate the “if it was Pride rules, nuh nuh nuh would have won!” If it was under Pride Rules they would have fought differently

Gus arguably won under unified rules if you give him rounds 2 and 3. As OP said, those rounds were very close. I was pulling for Jones in that fight but honestly expected them to announce that Gus had won.

Scores of 48-47 for Gus, 48-47 for Jones, or 49-46 for Jones are all reasonable.

Spending time on a fraud. He did not win anything.
Shogun actually defended his title twice
once against Juicy Jones
then he avenged Forrest griffin in his second defense

Rua then lost his belt to the last TRT needle user on the last ever TRT exemption Dan Henderson

Jon Jones now has a combined record of 0-24 due to all his fights being forfeited due to rampant designer PED usage

Anyone here remember ricco vs nog? Pride rules and pride judging were two separate things.

I felt it at first and reaffirmed it when I watched again....Gus was almost out by the end of the fifth. He was lucky to not get out right finished after that spinning elbow to his forehead.

I'm interested by the idea of 'if the fight had gone on.' To me, it depends on when Juicy Jones hit The Wall. Gus ran in to it early in the 4th and Juicy started landing a lot harder. But Gus soldiered on, even taking a couple vicious bombs in the 5th and staying in the fight.

I don't think Juicy Jones has the mental fortitude to push through The Wall. But that's just based on the fact that we're talking about Juicy Jones. For all I know, he had enough designer-microdose-PED-cardio pumping through his Juicy limbs to keep eye-poking for 5 more rounds.

I thought Jones won in a close fight.
You've got to take it from the champ, I didn't feel Gus did that.
Not only that, Gus was the only one that was in obvious trouble at any point in the fight.
I haven't seen it in its entirety since it happened but that's how I remember it.

I would have liked to see all of Jones fights where everyone got to cheat too.
The closest we probable ever got was undrrsized TRTitor who almost took his arm home.
Juiced Cormier murders Jones, juiced Gus murders Jones.
His whole career since Stephan Bonner is an asterisk.

no matter who you thought won gus deserved an immediate rematch. epic failure on dana's part. the rematch would have been huge and the only reason not to do it was to protect jon.

Agree. Gotta convincingly take it from the champ, so I’ve got no problem with Jones getting the nod. But this is also what still pisses me off to this day with regards to Penn vs Edgar 1. Frankie didn’t take that belt from BJ, the judges did.

Yeah, I thought Nog won despite all the UFC complaining. You have to remember, Pride judges took a very dim view of the lay and pray strategy..

I did think Gustafsson won the first fight with Jones though, by a very slim margin.

Jones vs Shogun was the biggest title fight beatdown in mma history.
