So I'm no chess player or fan but I got interested in Bobby Fischer because I kept hearing he was the best ever and was now a crazy cunt.

Turns out Bobby Fischer being the best ever has absolutely no basis in reality and is just a Cold War-era myth that Americans tell each other, even though they've never actually watched a chess match in their lives.

He was a pussy.

I wouldn't be that harsh on Fischer. I think it is generally recognised that he was one of the best for his time. But his problems with holding title matches, followed by his exile, plagued him. And his fall from grace, is now well entrenched.

Oh I know he's one of the best. My problem is he is often portrayed as THE best when his actual overall accomplishments pale in comparison to other champions.

The Fischer argument is just one example of a common flaw in people's ability to reason. It's the 'forever young' problem. Fischer is seen as the GOAT not in spite of his fleeting time at the top but because of it.

We never saw him lose his crown because he was too scared to lose and that's what makes him better than other guys that hung around long enough to be exposed as human. His 0 defences somehow makes him greater than someone with multiple defences. It's twisted logic but very common.

So you're saying he's the Rickson Gracie of chess?

Whoa, let's not go crazy. Fischer was undisputably the best in the world at one point and proved it in emphatic fashion. He just then immediately pussied out once he did.

Rickson is a whole different story. He's more akin to Steven Seagal.

I don't know who would technically be the greatest player, but if we are talking GOAT status in terms of how legendary, how memorable, most entertaining etc then Bobby Fischer wins hands down.

Dude was a child prodigy, whooping masters before he could bust a nut, an arrogant SOB in interviews, was involved in all sorts of international spy intrigue (yes he had KGB and CIA etc following him around), was getting personal briefings from Kissenger, disappeared at the peak of his fame, came back from hiding to kick more ass, directly disobeyed orders from US government to play chess in 'enemy territory', was on the run as a fugitive from George Bush Sr personally, captured and tortured in a japanese prison, received refugee status in Iceland, and ended his days as a hardcore conspiracy theorist literally putting tinfoil on his windows lol

LOL how awesome can you get???

Peak Kasparov, Fischer, or Karpov wouldn't be able to beat reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen in a match.

Very good post. Fischer is probably the greatest player in history, but Magnus Carlsen is well on his way to possibly replacing him.

I like champions in any sort of competition named Magnus.

This guy's name was literally Magnus Ver Magnussen:
