My Sirius Grappling match last night went great right up to the point where I lost. About five minutes in I was passing his guard again and left my left arm in a dumb place and he ripped a Kimura. My shoulders are trash, so I don’t have any ability (or at least no interest) to fight off a Kimura once my hand is past my thigh. My sudden tap surprised the commentators, but searing pain and snaps/pops were not part of the plan. The food news is I had a blast as always, and I can move my arm this morning so I don’t believe anything tragic happened.
I should get a video to post in a few days; the livestream was glitchy so it’s probably not worth posting.
I also got to meet DJ Jackson and watch him compete a few matches after mine.

That's awesome doc.. and hey, I get it, I use to love fighting off leg attacks (and slightly limping the next day)... Now with all I do and as much as I teach, there's no sense I feel these days

Getting old sucks. My shoulders start protesting right about when my arm passes my hip now, and I heard some real interesting noises as I tapped last night. Good reminder why I tap to Kimuras in training as soon as someone pulls my hand free. The good news is I was finally able to move my arm above my head about an hour after the match last night, and now it seems to move like it did before, it just hurts. All things considered that and a dislocated finger are no big deal. Check back in 10-20 years and see if I still feel that competing so much was a good idea.
Back at it tomorrow.

Despite it being his first year of wrestling, a shady 1st year coach, and three neck injuries my son has qualified to compete at state level.

How the hell do you compete so much? You got a rich uncle or something? LOL
I wish bro I'm always broke lol. I'm doing the UAEJJF British national pro in middle of February, Abu Dhabi grand slam in march, and another UAEJJF one in Budapest in April. I only compete IBJJF and UAEJFF now. I dont really hit the local ones these days

To cut costs downs I try enter before the early registration closes. Its quite cheaper. I dont stay in any fancy hotels. Just somewhere clean and cosy. And the flights from UK to rest of Europe are not that expensive.

He was really cool. It was quite the experience grappling with a world class dude watching from 5 feet away, and then getting to watch him go against Josh. I talked myself out of doing the BJJ dork thing and getting a selfie with him, but then the next day saw online that 99% of the other competitors did get a picture. Next time.

I was mistaken. My son goes to Super Sectionals (not state). If he wins there he will go to state.

- still a proud momma. :)

Yesterday's tourney, 2nd place

I start my training today for the IBJJF Orlando Open in April, but before that I may do a NAGA just to get tournament rounds in (and do a little leg locking no gi stuff too)

Not bad Doc, man I HATE when guys back up like that.... My advice to you would be in your stand up, lower your base a little, head fight a little more, and when you get that collar tie up, put a little more weight on his neck. Also try a few feints to interrupt his timing (he was counting you down).

I lost a match as a purple belt the same way, my coach told me to posture up, hips forward, grab your wrist/hand, and rock the baby towards his legs.... If he holds on, step over and armbar them the way Matt Hughes caught GSP in their first fight.

Great stuff Doc, I love this stuff, you are awesome.

I just finished 2nd at my first competition. 2nd out of 2 in my division...lol. I mistakenly signed up in the adult divison instead of the masters, and got worn the hell out by some 20 year old hopped up on Meth. I wasn't prepared for the intensity level. Lesson learned. I plan to compete another 3-4 times this year. Go Old Man Jitz!!!
I didn't realize how old this thread was when I hit the quote button. I only read page 1 and page 6 but I think it's awesome for everyone who trains and awesome for anyone who competes.

I competed my first year of training at a Naga. I learned about the intensity level difference as well as I learned a few tips on how to cut weight properly, as I learned by not cutting properly lol.

I had never cut weight before and started I think at 193 and 4 weeks later I was 183, or so I thought. I dieted the day before and took a hot bath and my mistakes were, only using my home scale, as well as not starting my cut early enough.

I intended on weighing 180 and then drinking and eating to be heavier, but unfortunately I weighed in at 173lbs which was 3lbs over the 170 limit so I was still in the 180 division but SUPER light lol.

I beat a guy who beat my teammate, and this was in the 20-30yr old division and I was 36 or 37 at the time. Won first two on points, but I SHOULD have rnc'd a guy and the fucking weak leading up to this event, my coaches literally went over switching to hand to hand when rnc wasn't working, and had I simply done what we practiced, I would've got the sub. I still won but that bothered me almost as much as losing the gold medal match. The gold medal match winner was a stud from Allan Mohler's gym. 26 and incredible shape but his technique was also tight. I gave him an arm b/c he had my back and was up on points so I just wanted to try to create something but as soon as he tried taking the bait I started a counter and he said fuck that and went right back to back control. I gave him my neck hoping to turn into him and create a reversal but he got the rnc. Ah well.

My kids competed with me and we got Gold Silver and Bronze as a family. All had at least 3 matches.

$80 to risk injury just so you can compete is hard to justify for me though.

Nice match. I'm a Kimura guy, so I caught him hunting for it as soon as he pulled guard. Why no takedown attempts?
Short answer- because I am not good enough.

Longer answer- I got too focused on trying to establish my preferred underhook while chasing him around. I tend to not shoot on people who are more than a couple of inches shorter than me unless I can get them to leave a foot when stepping back, and i just never got was able to take the control I wanted standing. As has been the case for me recently, I was too cautious in positions where I can afford to take risks, and then pushed the pace when I did not need to. I knew damn well he was looking for that Kimura as he was trying to set either that or the hip bump up the moment his back hit the mat, but instead of settling in half and working a deliberate pass, I decided to try to carry my momentum through to establishing a cross face and passing to side control. The worst part from my standpoint was I did nearly the same thing about six months ago in the gold medal match at a Newbreed Expert no-gi division. Hit a throw, guy scrambled to his feet eventually and immediately pulled guard, I knee sliced as he pulled, he re-established half and I left my left arm dangling for the Kimura as I tried to re-pass out of half guard.
I guess I am just a slow learner.

As I'm gearing up for my tournament, I've found videos of my potential opponents, so naturally I study it to determine traits they may have.... How much do you guys scout your opponents?

I'll be at the Fight2Win matches tomorrow to watch a few teammates. They have some really, really tough dudes so it will be interesting. Looking to hit the Dallas Open in early May but at Master 4, matches get really limited.

I used to religiously but I'm kinda caught in that mode where I'd rather just think about my own strategy. Eventually I'll get to where I can get the detailed strategy based on his style coupled with have the confidence of running my game.

I am out here in Dallas training, my coach and I might go to F2W tonight if time allows.

The day was not mine, but it felt good to compete for the first time in 2 years... Looking forward to the next one.

3rd place.
