Aquino hit another one last night.

He's the first player in MLB history to hit 8 HRs in his first 12 games.

It's very interesting to see how the pitchers are approaching him. He tends to chase the low and away curve from righties so he is getting a healthy dose of those, but anything up in the zone he has been absolutely destroying.

He has a slash of .452 / .500 / 1.161
25 yr old "rookie" though

He changed his swing last year. Caught fire. He wasn't even on the prospect lists a couple years ago.

The pitchers will figure him out, but there is no denying his power.

The fuck is slash
Slash includes the 3 standard measurements of hitting proficiency.
  • Batting average
  • On base percentage
  • Slugging percentage
The figures are typically separated by a slash, so it's become known as that.

Someone hitting for a .327 average, a .435 on base percentage and a .546 slugging would have a "slash" of .327/.435/.546

I'm excited that I'm excited about baseball.

What period do you guys think was the best time for baseball?

I'm partial to the 80s.

When I was 12 (1985) I was a walking encyclopedia. I could tell you what everyone was batting. All the stats. The standings. That was before the time of the internet obviously so I was getting all my info from the sports page.

Dad used to get pissed because I'd steal the sports page before he would get to it and take it with me to school.

My favorite program was TWIB.

Dwight Gooden, Hershiser, Eckersley, Valenzuela, Mike Schmidt, Wizard of Oz, Rickey Henderson, Tim Raines, Eric Davis, Tony Gwynn, Andre Dawson, Pete Rose, George Brett, Kirby Puckett, Don Mattingly

I'm biased because of how closely I was following the game back then, but there were so many great players from that era.

What I enjoy doing is editing the rosters on MLB The Show so that most teams will have 1-2 super stars. For example the Oakland A's have Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, and Mark McGwire, Yankees have Jeter, Boggs, and Lou Gherig, etc....

Of the players you mentioned, I have Eckersely, Schmidt, Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson, Tony Gwynn, Pete Rose, and Kirby Puckett in my game :)

I'm currently playing the Road to the Show mode but prior to that I was 3-4 yrs deep in a franchise that had all the legends sprinkled in. It's so much fun to look at the league leaders and see guys I created at the top, where they should be.

I'm still educating myself on the history of baseball but so far, it seems like the early 1900's and 1930's is when baseball was at it's peak. The game hasn't changed that much, to my surprise. Bats are still the same regulations now as they were then, field sizes are the same(I believe, still trying to get clarification on that). It's just the guys seemed to be better back then.

If you think about it, there was no NFL, there was no NBA, so baseball was more than likely held to a standard we cannot understand in the sports world we grew up in. If you think NFL is popular now, imagine how popular it'd be if there was 0 basketball and 0 baseball.

It's crazy the #'s guys in the 1900's used to put up. Insane I tell ya!!

The dead ball era was very different. The spitter was legal. Pitchers would put tobacco juice on the ball to help it curve or drop. It also made the ball harder to see because it would get so dirty - they'd play with the same ball for much of the game.

The outfields were huge - some of them were over 500' to the centerfield fence. That's why there were so many doubles and triples back then - if you hit a gapper there was nothing to stop the ball from rolling.

And I'm not sure when it changed but it was around the early 1900's when they started counting foul balls as strikes. That was a HUGE advantage for pitchers.

The game was focused on defense and small ball. Lots of steals. And hit and runs. It wasn't really until Ruth came along that people realized you could score by hitting the ball over everyone's heads. Haha.

Well the spitter can easily still be in today's game. I watched a video last week on the spitball lol. See, told you I'm engulfing myself with baseball lol.

But if anything, everything you said just highlights my stance even more. Those rules would favor a pitcher, not a batter, but yet guys like Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Babe Ruth, those guys were putting up stats guys today can't even do.

Where do you get the information on the sizes of the older ballparks? I've tried googling that without success.

Doubles and triples were easier back then because of the large outfields.
And the gloves weren't what they are today.

Not sure if they scored errors like they do now or just counted them as hits.

Well bigger fields is a good point as to why batters would have more success but on the same token, how did Babe Ruth hit 60 in bigger fields?

And as you mentioned, if you played against pitchers who used dirty balls, spit/tobacco on balls, then batting for average could have been even harder to do back then.

Did you know Babe Ruth tried to eat sheep balls thinking it'd give him an edge on the plate?

It was usually centerfield that was huge. The lines were typically shorter. And not all fields were like that. When Ruth hit the majors (1919), that was generally considered the end of the dead ball era.

Also - ground rule doubles counted as HRs until 1931.

Umps make me laugh
They all act all like they’re tough and most all of them try to pretend to be badasses because they’re on the field with the real people of the game

Their demeanour makes me laugh
