Why did the US do worse than the rest of the world? I can't answer this question without knowing context. Is this in reference to how many have tested positive? I can say that China is never going to be transparent with its numbers, just like it has been telling anyone and everyone who will listen that the US created the virus and used it as a bio weapon against them. As far as the US is concerned, we are testing much more than the rest of the world, so numbers confirmed are based upon more people being tested.

Yes, but comparing the per capita ratio of the entire US to densely populated affected areas in Europe or Asia is also an incredibly flawed metric. The only comparable city in the US to large European or Asian cities in terms of density is New York, and look how that is working out.
You could take the 10 lowest populated states in the US and collectively they only have the population of Seoul but take up basically all of Europe in area. It's the spread in the big cities that tells us the story of whether containment efforts are working or not.
