What Ever Happened to Eddie – Eddie and the Monsters

Thursday song of the day: Today’s song was recorded by a former child actor.

Patrick Allen Lilley, using the stage name Butch Patrick, played werewolf boy Eddie Munster on the 1960s sitcom The Munsters. The series lasted only two seasons but is still widely remembered. After that he appeared in several movies and had guest spots on TV series. By the 80s, his acting career was pretty much over and he had a drug problem.

At that time, he tried to revive his career by making a record. The song, What Ever Happened to Eddie, sought to cash in on his prior fame as Eddie Munster. The band name was Eddie and the Monsters (as opposed to Munsters – most likely to avoid being sued), and the music was based on the old Munsters theme song. It was a novelty song at best, and not a very good one. You can tell from the video that it was a pretty low-budget affair.

Obviously, What Ever Happened to Eddie did not chart at all. I happened to be living in the Los Angeles area at the time and saw it on local late-night music video shows a few times, but I doubt it got much play in other parts of the country.

Butch Patrick had several run-ins with the law in the 1990s. He went into rehab for his drug addiction in 2010 and was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011. Apparently, he recovered, and is still alive today.

@Rhino
Was it you I was chatting to about NAMM when I went to see Extreme a couple years ago? Have you listened to Drama Gods? Tragically they only had one album but I loved them. I know you're a bassist but Nuno is so fucking awesome.

Mama Weer All Crazee Now – Slade

Friday song of the day: Today’s song was inspired by a show in which the audience destroyed seating in the arena.

Slade was a glam rock, and later heavy metal, band from England who reached their commercial peak in the early to mid-1970s. They were very successful in their native England, scoring numerous hits, including six that reached #1. They never really caught on in the US, however. Slade did have two Top 40 hits in the States in the 1980s, but they are most remembered here as the originators of Cum On Feel the Noize, which was a big hit in a cover version by Quiet Riot.

Today’s song was from their third album, 1972’s Slayed? It originated from a particularly enthusiastic concert at Wembley Arena where afterward the band noted that the audience had destroyed a lot of the seats. The title Mama Weer All Crazee Now referred to the craziness of the crowd, although the lyrics really have nothing to do with the audience. As you can tell, one of Slade’s gimmicks was intentionally misspelling many of their song titles.

Mama Weer All Crazee Now reached #1 in the UK and was in the Top 10 in several other European countries. It was barely noticed in the United States, topping out at #76 on the Billboard Hot 100.
