As many of you know, Warchild is quite the laid-back, suburban yuppie these days. The 3rd-world living, tranny-smashing, Iron Man-blasting, real-life Dos Equis man became a very average middle-class guy in a HOA subdivision, living on a cul-de-sac. Traded in my motorcycle for a Volvo, traded in Mexican girls for a pretty wife, traded in my old career for one healthcare management. My son turned on year old a couple weeks ago, and he's beautiful, a little Gerber model that is going to smash every teenage bimbo in the South.

That said, I've felt in a bit of a rut the past few months, and it's not due to the wife and child, who have me quite pleased. In fact, we're going to start working on Warchild 3.0 next spring, giving me an excuse to be a larger sports sedan in the fall (really the only reason to have a second child). I'm thinking Maxima or Charger SRT. That said, I can't be the "go where I want, when I want" type anymore, and I have commitments at home... so I've decided to start a business.

For a couple of years, when I moved to North Carolina, I operated a semi-successful online bookstore. As in, barely successful, but the goal was never to get rich. I worked around 10 hours per week, cleared around 2-3k per month, and contributed my share to our household while I tried to work out a new career, as the hospitality industry (my lifelong career) in this state is a joke, and my career effectively came to an end immediately upon my move. I transitioned into healthcare, and have a pretty nice gig, but at about half a year in, it occurs to me... FUCK. I'd like to be the boss again. I mean, in my office, I am the boss, but I'd like to be ownership.

So Warchild has come up with a brilliant plan: Start a small business, no more than five hours per week (LOL), without telling the wife, saving the returns, for a year or two, until I have the capital to start a larger-earning business. Yep. Start a business and save money to start another business. I submitted my LLC paperwork yesterday, made my first supply purchase online (which should be here in about two weeks), and I intend to get started.

I get hour-long lunches during the week, and most Fridays I'm off at around 2pm instead of 5pm, giving me a few hours to work. I have started this thread share my revenue and expenses, frustrations and progress, and if there is actual real progress, reveal my insane and selfish plan for a business in 2016/2017. One thing I absolutely do not want to do is take on debt in opening a larger business, so I intend to save and entirely self-finance. Warchild is not a fan of debt. Other than our home loan, the Warchild's owe $0.

Nope. Although I have some leftover inventory that I'm going to re-upload, as well as a few cellphones and whatnot. I might re-open my Tijuana cellphone pipeline, if that's still profitable.

Pet store would be the idea I want to go after most.
Hmmm. I guess you would be looking at initial start up costs of inventory, leasing space, insurance, licensing, marketing, etc. Would likely have to meet with a bank about a line of operating credit, and they will want collateral...personal assets, to secure the loan. Starting any business is a risk, but if it's a passion of yours and you think that it's viable, then go for it.

Exactly.. There's no pet store here in town that's reputable and I am sick of driving over 1 hour just to get supplies for my tanks. But I'm not sure it would be viable here or not. That's the problem, since it's a highly transient town due to the college.

I love this idea of starting something small BackOffWarchild @BackOffWarchild and then taking it from there once it's generated enough income to grow into something bigger or something else. I would love to do something like this. Part of my problem is having worked for the same company for 16 years, I haven't had to think about those kinds of things and I have literally zero ideas. I wish I'd moved around in the job world more, would have had some more perspective and gotten more hustle experience. But, I do occasionally have random weird ideas, who knows, maybe I can fashion a wee business out of one one day :)

Maybe you could see if there's a local small business council that you could meet with, and see if they can offer an opinion? Is there a Pet Smart or anything like that nearby, that you would be competing with? Or would you be the only game in town?

Landscape design or something to do with animals...foster care & relocation, or grooming & boarding, etc. I think you would be sensational at either one.

haha I talk about animals and gardening a lot don't I hahaha! Yeah, def two of my passions. I'd love to do something outside the box with either or both...something I could do online, from anywhere and create some passive income. I should schedule time to brainstorm and really take the time to generate and vet some ideas :)

I'd be the only game in town. Closest petsmart or petco is 1 hour away. The shithole petstore in town is fuckign horrible.. but people go there because why drive an hour each way for just crickets or small food items etc.. that walmart doesnt carry?

Well in that case, it sounds like the demand would be there then. I would start by creating a business plan, that you can approach the bank with. Everything will hinge on the line of credit. You get that approved and the test is just hard work and time.

Maybe? I dont want to be a generic store, wanted to focus on fish/shrimp etc.. that's the reason why I'd be nervous. Business credit and personal credit are two different lines, yes?

Correct. You will require a business line of credit. Basically you will need to outline a business plan that includes total initial start up costs, estimated monthly/annual operating costs, and estimated monthly/annual revenue. That will allow you and the bank to calculate how much credit you will require. Once that is established, the bank is going to want collateral to secure their loan. Almost every small business owner that I know, put their house, personal savings, 401k...something up as collateral.

In your case, I would think the start up costs themselves would be relatively low. What shit gets real is your salary and insurance. Giving up your current salary & benefits, to take this on and likely working twice as hard as you are now, to make it successful. But hey, people do it all the time to chase a passion and work for themselves.

Regarding being store that focuses on a certain type of fish or whatever. I think that would be really tough because your shrinking your customer base so much.

I have nothing for collateral. Awesome.

If it's a small town I don't see any demand for a fish/shrimp pet store. Even in LA or Chicago the market would be small.
