Though it wouldn't work in the U.S. because of the 2nd amendment (we had an assault weapons ban from 1994-2004 but it had to go through Congress), Presidents can sign executive orders that bypass Congressional authority on a lot of things. The only trouble with executive orders is that the next President can simply issue another e.o. that repeals the one signed by his predecessor (Trump made a big show of doing this with a few orders that Obama signed).
It sounds like what Trudeau did was 100% legal, so I don't understand all the tears from the gun nuts.

There are people who will lose thousands of dollars worth of property, not to mention many businesses that will be absolutely financially fucked between this and the covid lockdown.
