I learn what a mud motor is and you get to elevate your self esteem by speaking down to me. Win/win.
Fuck yes!
A mudmotor is an air cooled boat motor that can go through mud. It's a little more capable than a jet but slower. A jet is more capable than an outboard by far, but it's air-cooled so I you need to be able to feed it decent water.

What’s the downside of an outboard jet? Why don’t I ever see them in lakes?

You may not know you see them because they look like a prop motor while they are trimmed down., but they also lose about 30% power because they aren't effecient.
For example, if I had a prop lower unit I'd be putting out 115 hp, but because I have a jet it only puts out 80ish hp

Can you convert one into the other? Jet to prop or prop to jet?

Looks like a mudmotor is just an outboard with a prop protector.

Tell me I'm wrong.

Few downsides but not many. Biggest downside is they aren’t as efficient as a prop motor (you’ll experience roughly a 30% reduction in hp). That said, they are a great motor for casual boaters.

You probably have seen them though. They look very much like the prop outboards you’re used to, only trimmed down.

I’ve been watching YT vids and reading boat forums since I posted that question. This post has given great clarity, thank you.

You getting a jet boat?
Doubtful. The day my kids or wife or somebody else I don’t hate tells me they want to join me on the water I’ll get serious about buying a boat. We’ve had a friend join us fishing and bring his 12’ tinner out while we all have bellyboats and it looks like too much effort. I prefer smaller lakes, 20 hectares is about as big as I’ll go generally speaking. I can 4x4 into any spot with my float tube in the box no problem. Once I start going where boat launches are the water seems less remote and has more people. I don’t have those cool areas like you post to take advantage of a jet propelled craft unless I get into a whole other world of river fishing. I’d love to do that but that’s lots of time and would feel like I’m starting over again. Maybe in a few years if fly fishing loses some interest which I can’t see happening right now.

I don't understand how they wouldn't want you to get a boat. My wife threatened to divorce me if I sold our old boat before we had a new one.

Nobody here is saying don’t get a boat but me. My wife has been sending me little Jon boats and stuff for a while now. I just don’t want to get into one until I know they’ll join me. Too much effort for me to spend the money and commit to hauling it in and out of water solo. I love my float tube. So simple and does all I need for now. Kids are having fun joining me the odd time, I just need to find a set of second hand waders so my wife can kick out with me in my other belly boat. She doesn’t get it yet. Her outdoors time is cycling and things fitness related. I think once she joins me for a few outings and can see how rewarding it is she’ll be looking to join. At least that’s my hope.

Sounds like a solid plan, you should really get a boat ESPECIALLY if your wife is telling you to (special women like that are few and far between). It's really not that bad as far as maintenance and stuff like that. The biggest time suck is when you initially get the boat and want to get it set up exactly how you want (I added a fuse block, breakers, light bar, and moved some electrical systems from one battery to another, plus some other odds and ends. I've probably spent another few grand, and several hours, but it's almost there). After that just take care of if when you are done and it's not all that much effort. It takes me less than 5 min to launch the boat, let the motor warm up, and park the truck...And that's when I do it by myself. When my wife is there is take about 2-3 minutes. What's your biggest concern with time and effort? Remember when you are watching the boat ramp and see people struggling those are the fucking morons, people who know what they are doing are in and out with the quickness.
