Amy Coney Barrett: spotlight falls on secretive Catholic group People of Praise
Trump’s pick is a member of a ‘covenant community’ that faces claims of a ‘highly authoritarian’ structurewww.theguardian.com
Interviews with experts who have studied charismatic Christian groups such as People of Praise, and with former members of the group, plus a review of the group’s own literature, reveal an organization that appears to dominate some members’ everyday lives, in which so-called “heads” – or spiritual advisers – make big life decisions, and in which members are expected to financially support one another.
Married women – such as Barrett – count their husbands as their “heads” and all members are expected to donate 5% of their income to the organization.
Some conservative and progressive activists have said any discussion of Barrett’s faith is inappropriate in the context of a Senate confirmation to assess her judicial qualifications, and potentially reflects anti-Catholic bigotry.
I'm not sure if it will "rally" Biden supporters but I feel like pretty much anyone that was planning to vote and already leaning towards Biden just had Trump make their mind up for them.Does Trump pushing the supreme court nominee before the election risk rallying Biden supporters to vote?
I'm just thinking about whether it gets Biden voters off the couch. Hillary supporters stayed home and a big part of Trump's campaign was targeted demoralizing of those voters. Keep them apathetic about their candidate.I'm not sure if it will "rally" Biden supporters but I feel like pretty much anyone that was planning to vote and already leaning towards Biden just had Trump make their mind up for them.
It's not going to change the mind of anyone that was going to skip voting and choose to bitch and moan nonstop regardless of the outcome.
It may be the icing on the cake but pretty much Trump's existence seems to be enough to get people to vote this time.I'm just thinking about whether it gets Biden voters off the couch. This court move seems one of those most likely to engage a "fuck you" vote in response.
I've heard people rationalize a Biden vote by it being a way to keep Trump from appointing another judge. Now that that's flown out the window it seems like a decent reason to stay on the couch.Does Trump pushing the supreme court nominee before the election risk rallying Biden supporters to vote?
I thought Trump said absentee ballots were perfectly fine. Absentee ballots and been happening for decades.100% secure way to vote.
Updated: U.S. Postal Service investigates mail, including absentee ballots, found along road in Outagamie County
A USPS spokesman would not comment specifically on when or where the mail was found, or how many absentee ballots were recovered.www.postcrescent.com
Neither the article, nor his post say anything about Trump. It's just an article on USPS being kind of useless.I thought Trump said absentee ballots were perfectly fine. Absentee ballots and been happening for decades.
It is the unsolicited ballots that he states are the concern.
Finally a debate. This shit will be gold.
Fun timing...
Trump’s Taxes Show Chronic Losses and Years of Income Tax Avoidance (Published 2020)
The Times obtained Donald Trump’s tax information extending over more than two decades, revealing struggling properties, vast write-offs, an audit battle and hundreds of millions in debt coming due.www.nytimes.com
This actually highly concerning. Bankruptcy and debts are major issues when considering national security. Any of us would be turned down for a top secret clearance with this kind of behavior. It is one thing when it was just his companies. But personally being on the hook for 400 million without revenue stream to pay it is a position of weakness that is easily manipulated.Over the past decade, he appears to have filled the cash-flow gaps with a series of one-shots that may not be available again.
In 2012, he took out a $100 million mortgage on the commercial space in Trump Tower. He took nearly the entire amount as a payout, his tax records show. His company has paid more than $15 million in interest on the loan, but nothing on the principal. The full $100 million comes due in 2022.
In 2013, he withdrew $95.8 million from his Vornado partnership account.
And in January 2014, he sold $98 million in stocks and bonds, his biggest single month of sales in at least the last two decades. He sold $54 million more in stocks and bonds in 2015, and $68.2 million in 2016. His financial disclosure released in July showed that he had as little as $873,000 in securities left to sell.
Mr. Trump’s businesses reported cash on hand of $34.7 million in 2018, down 40 percent from five years earlier.
What’s more, the tax records show that Mr. Trump has once again done what he says he regrets, looking back on his early 1990s meltdown: personally guaranteed hundreds of millions of dollars in loans, a decision that led his lenders to threaten to force him into personal bankruptcy.
This time around, he is personally responsible for loans and other debts totaling $421 million, with most of it coming due within four years. Should he win re-election, his lenders could be placed in the unprecedented position of weighing whether to foreclose on a sitting president.
Also that flies in the face of the "blind trust" he setup when he was supposed to divest himself of all of his Trump assets as president. This actually highly concerning.
