No one is forcing them to take a civil case. If this was a criminal case where they were assigned by the courts, then I get what you are saying. That's not what's happening here.

If they aren’t partners in the firm they may fear reprisal from their bosses but any lawyer can turn down any case

They also might have had the file come across their desk and gone "This seems like horseshit but we should probably look into it. Better safe than sorry."
