We have a weekly poker game and one day you show up and you call me a liar and a cheat. You state that I've been rigging the game for years. The other guys at the table start looking at me funny. You don't have any evidence of this. You start pointing out there are things and I show you the log books for the previous weeks. I let you examine the deck to show that nothing's marked. You state I owe you, that the whole game owes you. You didn't get your cut and you've been cheated out of it. Again you show up claiming all of this and calling me a liar. Calling the whole game rigged. And again you don't have any evidence. you just start calling out things the cards are marked. The chips are fake. Things are being dealt off the bottom! One by one none of these things are true. You never had any evidence and in fact the only reason you're doing it is because it benefits you personally...maybe we'll give in!
But now the other guys at the poker table don't trust the game. You came in and you fucked up the weekly poker game because you're an asshole that cares most about winning.
The net result of these actions isn't just an investigation. It isn't just finding out the truth. And in that case you deserve a punch in the mouth for being such a dick head.
So what's the penalty for Trump and others making things up at the end for personal gain? for Rudy Giuliani lying once again as he's done over and over? For doing all of this while also trying to cheat at the same time?
In a normal world, that's a punch in the mouth. Not just, "oh, well you didn't find anything so okay...next accusation."
