I singled out the UK folks because this thread is a result of me reading a story

"Sienna Miller is blasted for 'disrespect' after appearing on Graham Norton's TV chat show without a poppy"
Sienna Miller is blasted for not wearing a poppy on The Graham Norton Show | Daily Mail Online

And I was curious about British public opinion.
The daily mail loves tearing into people to, they get rabid over everything from immigration to "pitbulls". Every year someone goes on the BBC, beep, without a poppy and then they get it in the neck...

I do not understand what you are trying to show me here? that a Canadian wrote the poem? I volunteered at the museum of the regiments for 15 years. I know my ww1 & ww2 history my friend.
Tuck it back in your pants sir, I'm not here to compare. I'm posting to show what his comment could be related to, that's all.

sorry, I just dont understand how someone doesnt know that the UK celebrate Remembrance Day. we (Canada) may have wrote the poem that inspired wearing them but we werent the first people to do so. it actually was americans, then the UK, aussies and indians. then Canadians.

we just ran with it so hard (because we wrote the peom).

What are they signing up to do?
Dunno. Get a career? Anyone signing up after the Iraq invasion must know our government is using our troops for political reasons. Iraq and Afghanistan weren't defensive wars

I know. sometimes I forget that not everyone, and when I say everyone I mean like MOST people, study history to the extent that I do. so it makes me dickish when I dont really intent to be.

then there are those things called "tact" and "empathy" that I severely lack.

We don't wear them in Hong Kong, but I always wore one in Canada.

I believe the poppy thing is more Canadian than British, isn't it?

In WW1, the Irish were drafted, despite warnings it was a mistake
Just closed the gap on a bunch of stuff I keep hearing and didn't understand the arguments.

Makes sense. And I see the subsequent overtones of nationalism, allegiance to crown, allegiance/rejection of authoritarianism, etc.

We should never have been over there in the start. Thank Tony Blair and the bush administration

I come from a family that has several members that have served in several wars

Great Grandfather WWI (Army)
Grandfather WWII (Army) (won 3 Bronze Stars fighting in the Pacific)
Other Grandfather WWII (Navy)
Father (Army) Korea and Viet Nam Vet
Younger brother (Army) Iraq and Afghanistan Vet (Two Bronze Stars)

I have worked with countless guys that have served American and British. Much Respect for anyone that raises their hand and swears on oath to give their life if need be for me and mine

I'd wear it if I was in England
I say this as respectfully as I can HG. But none of that is anything to be proud of

Most of them wars were fake. Meaning we lied to invade those countries. This is a fact. Look through our history books. We (UK and US) will lie to go to war.

Golf of Tonkin for example, that was a lie. 58,000 people died based on a lie.

The whole middle east invasion is war profit driven war. You know how much wealth Iraq have lost since we went and took over their coutnry. All the oil, vains of lithium, copper, iron that the US are shipping back to their own country. all taken from another man's land.

The UK and US have been fucking with Iraq forever. We were testing weapons on Iraq all the way back in 1920

Nearly every war starts with a false flag operation and our governments will and do lie to go to war and invade other countries.

Im at work so I can't elaborate on my points and im expecting a shit ton of rainbows for this

I didn't take it as being disrespectful.

I look at it this way. Soldiers are often put in situations they cannot control. Some act courageous, some don't, most are somewhere in between. My point is that anyone that is willing to give their life up for my family deserves the respect for doing so. Some might not take that oath with a bit of honesty but I will give them the respect just in case they do because you don't know where a man truly stands until they are put in that situation.

My Daily Fail favourite is the 9,000 ways you can get cancer from living.

I wear a poppy out of sympathy with a bunch of terrified young men. WW1 and 2 history gets me in the heart. But I completely understand the ideological and political reasoning behind not wearing one, or why some people wear a white one. Now that the vast majority of WW2 soldiers have died, though, I can see myself lapsing in wearing it because I wear it out of sympathy for them, not as a marker of a militaristic bent of thinking. Definitely not a "glory of war" person. Maybe I'll start re-reading "The Restoration Trilogy" every year instead.

Wear one, get one for the car grill, have been known to have wooden crosses with poppys on in the garden.

I don't care for any political bull but will show my 100% support for these people.

Friends fathers sons daughters and wife's I think we all have some kind of connection to these people and a poppy is a very small way of showing my respect.

I don't think any less of someone for not wearing one but think highly of someone who does.

Very commendable in my eyes.

I'd like to point out a few things. The middle east has been a warring shit hole since before the Iraq war
The US lost on bids for natural resources in Iraq, China won them.
Again the middle east fucks it self up just fine without us getting involved. But if it is going to be a 3rd world shit hole with no hope then someone might as well put those natural resources to good use, because they sure as fuck can't.

That's a very good point China on the quiet have taken control of a large part of the resources, same in Africa.

Hey don't let that fact get in the way of people pretending like the US is the sole reason that area of the world is fucked.

There was more oil being exported in the corrupt UN's oil for food program

U.S. Imports from Iraq of Crude Oil and Petroleum Products (Thousand Barrels)

China on the other hand...
Iraq - International - Analysis - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

By every measure, the USA was better off profiteering in the previous setup with the UN keeping Iraq on lockdown.

Afghanistan?

OEC - Afghanistan (AFG) Exports, Imports, and Trade Partners
A rather paltry trade.

Maybe we did go in for oil. But we are just REALLY bad at reaping the benefits if that's the case.

Giving contracts to government chosen economic winners? Protecting geopolitical position? Those all seem like obvious winners

The idea of going for oil? Never seemed to make sense as we were the most secure in the previous setup and the numbers show its just not happening.
