March of the Cicadas

These things are everywhere. I actually put on earplugs when I was working outside because these fuckers are so loud.

I used to date a Finnish chick. Once we were driving down the road, and she went "what's that noise?" I said "that what now?" and we had a bit of a confusion until I realised that we were driving past a long park with a bunch of trees next to the road that were FULL of cicadas. I wasn't hearing them because they're a part of summer my whole life, and we were in a car. She made me stop the car so she could investigate. She couldn't believe that insects could make that noise, she thought I was trolling her as I'd done several times before with Aussie/NZ nature and wildlife.

Yeah. I'm used to hearing a few every year.
But this Brood X is crazy. They are everywhere. I always drive with my windows down, but not this summer. Yesterday I had 6 fly into my truck window as I was driving down the road. One hit me in the face.

Annoying bastards.

LOL at "catch them". I was mowing the lawn and ended up with about 10 of them crawling on my shirt. They aren't an elusive species. You can just pick them off the trees.

I ate one a few years back. Not delicious. Then I tried to grill one. Still not delicious. I'll leave them for the birds.

About to go fishing with the most confidence I’ve ever had. I’ve fished this lake 4 times and have been skunked everytime. However last time I was here, I met this crusty old pot smoker who has fished this lake since the mid 70s. He mapped out the deep spots on the lake and even gave me a spot two boat lengths off the island that is “hot”. He says he’s been catching huge large mouth bass, and walleye at this spot. He even told me the lure he is using.

I bought the lure.

And I bought an anchor so I can set up shop.

I’m also going to be using this dynamite little lure I got in one of ThatOneDude @ThatOneDude ‘s mystery tackle box.

Shit is about to get real.
Dragging a toy fish with a dozen barbed hooks through the water is cheating. I approve of your anchor though.

Yes. I should have taken your advice long ago (You’re smart and have some really great ideas). I exponentially increased the amount of casts I was getting. Before i would get a few casts in, then I’d have to put down the rod, pick up the paddle and reposition. Over and over.

This was relaxing as hell. I dropped anchor. Took my paddle apart and put it inside the hull and just fished. It was awesome.

I can't wait until you drop anchor in an area deeper than your rope and you flip your boat.

Fan-fucking-tasting! And as much as I’d love to hear a story about you sinking your boat don’t let Hauler @Hauler scare you. Unless you got your anchor from an old tug boat it ain’t flipping you over. I mean you’re a fat mess and probably spaz around in your boat all the time and stay upright just fine. My anchor is 10lbs iirc and there’s no issues ever. Next upgrade I’d highly recommend is some sort of sonar. The fish finder idea is cool but having something to let you know your depth in so helpful, oh and water temp too is great info to have.

And bait.
Try using bait.

I swear it improves your probability of catching a fish by a factor of 10.

Bait, treble hooks, multiple rods, downrigger’s… Nothing but crutches for the desperate and inexperienced fisherman.
