He timed that perfectly. Stayed back on the ball so that when he caught it his momentum was already with him so he could uncork a screamer. Great play.

While it will certainly change performance (otherwise why do it at all?) - my assumption is that Cole's struggles are either mental or physical.
He doesn't appear to trust his slider anymore. His latest outing saw him use it only 6% of his pitches (previous 2 outings were at 30%)
Cole's slider spin rate was typically in the 2700s. Last night he averaged 2402.
2700 isn't awesome - puts him the "above average" category, but 2400 is pretty weak - probably why he only threw it 5 times.

Just watched camarena, a pitcher for the Padres, come up with 2 outs and bases loaded. Announcers saying, in a respectful tone, just happens to be bad timing for him to come up down 8-2 with them loaded up.

Reds are making some noise. Sitting at 47-42 and have won 8/10.
They are in 2nd place, 5 games back from the Brewers. This is a huge part in the year due to some very odd scheduling, as the Reds play the Brewers 7 times in a row. 4 @ MIL prior to the All Star Break, then 3 vs MIL immediately after the break. Reds have taken 2 of 3 so far in the first series.
Last night they got one over on Brewers stud Josh Hader in the 9th when Suarez knocked his 18th HR with a 418 ft oppo moonshot.

A much better mix of his off-speed stuff (change, curve, slider). That's a good sign. Assuming he was using the sticky stuff, this outing shows he's adjusted and is confident throwing those pitches again.
99 mph heater on the 129th pitch of the game to close it out.
