At a conceptual level they were a misguided attempt to help natives
but many or all of them were terribly mismanaged, and acted inhumanely toward their charges.

They were shitty to them for sure but it was also an era when they were shitty to everyone. Kids got the strap in school right up in to the 80s . Catholic schools probably best kids even longer .a lot of this took place in an era when people still died from common diseases .there could be a lot of reasons for the graves

Really there is no good outcome when a technological civilization meets a far less developed one. They cannot exist side by side in a parallel society, and there's no way to bring them into modern society while keeping anything crucial to their traditional way of life.
